CGN,

I've had my Type 56 SKS for 2 years now and I've decided to mount a red dot for hunting purposes. Im trying to stay under 200$.

I just got the Choate mount from SKSman drilled and tapped and now I'm stuck between 3 red dots. Which one would you choose?

1: Bushnell TRS 25
2: Bushnell Trophy 1x28
3: Bushnell Tactical Elite T-dot 1x32
4: Other - Why?

The reviews all seem very similar for each so I’m looking for some feedback from the CGN community. Before I did any research I was going to get the Trophy 1x28 since its affordable and appears to be of good quality. if you replace the rings.
Any feedback would be helpful!

You might want to consider how high the dot will be mounted. Anything with rings and you'll have even more space, on top of the choate mount. If it's the standard sks stock the cheek weld will already be somewhat hard to use.

I have a trs-25 on mine which works great, but keep in mind looking through the lens isn't perfectly circular because part of the electronics block the view. It's like covering up part of the circle from 4 to 5 o'clock. Not really an issue but thought I'd mention it. The 3moa dot is really bright, I use setting 5 of 11 even on a bright day.

You can usually find them on the optics EE for about $100-110 shipped, that's what I paid.

Other options would be the red dots from vortex such as the sparc or strikefire, and the burris microdot fast fire ii or III.

Bowzy,

Thanks for the info, good call on height of the mount plus rings, It would be a little uncomfortable that’s for sure. If I do decide on the Trophy or Tactical I'd hafto get a cheek rest. The TRS would be the "lowest" one and the electronic block shouldn't be an issue. I recall seeing your setup in another thread, looks pretty solid! Il reserch vortex and Burris. I havent included them because I'm on a tight budget and Bushnell seems to be an affordable option. Plus I have NO knowledge of optics so thats why I ask.

Thanks!

I like the TRS-25 quite a bit. Its compact, lightweight, has good glass and a crisp, bright dot. Plus it doesn't break all the time like aimpoint knockoffs that cost almost as much as the trs. You still won't have a cheek weld with the lowest red dot on the choate mount or any mount for that matter. A stock pack works well and can be adjusted by adding spacers like strips of rubber inner tube.

None. The dots cover too much area at 100 yards. 3 to 5 MOA at 100.

Hmm, I've been hearing different things I guess... but thanks for the input.

Yeah I do like it too but I think Il hafto go with something different. The Choate mount has a total of 6 rail "inserts", 3 in the front and 3 in the back. I’m pretty sure I won’t be able to secure the TRS onto it since its not long enough...

That’s what happened with the Tasco red dot I tried to mount last time. So that being said I'm leaning more towards the Trophy 1x28 since I can buy better rings and make it fit on the mount without compromising eye relief.

Thoughts?

For me it's the BP-02 mount with an Sightmark reflex sight,Ultra Shot QD Digital Switch (SM14000).

Seiously,Sightmark did suprise me with the quality of the reflex sight for the price 135$ shipped.Really a good deal price/quality.I didnt wanted to put a 200-300$ optic on an sks.

For 200 you can put a mil-spec optic such as the PK-A or a PDK-23 on your sks. They are available from eastwavescope.com
These are made in the Russian Federation and are in use with Various armed forces. For example the Venezualan Army uses a variant of the PK-A that takes AA bateries.

Intresting, thanks! Maybe on my other SKS il give it a try. Or if my bushnell fails. I ordered the Trophy 1x28 with UTG scope rings off amazon.ca for 130$ shipped. That sight appears to be the same lenght as the mount so it should work perfectly.

I'll be putting a Vortex Strikefire on mine. IMO it's the upper limit of what I would be willing to spend on an optic for an SKS, and it's a decent enough optic with an excellent warranty.

bushnell MP red dot looks bad ass on an SKS with a mag wedge rail..... it even has back up irons on top for when it inevitably fails like all bushnell products :p

but before I get slammed to bad... seriously... this is what I put on mine.... for the aforementioned reasons

Yeah I've looked at this one too but with the Choate mount it sits high! It makes it uncomfortable to look down the sight. I could just buy a cheek rest I guess. Maybe il invest in it in the future. But from what I can read the Bushnell Trophy is a decent red dot for the money.

I put one on one of my SKS's too, it's a bit odd feeling because of the top heavy balance, but when I have all my SKS's laying about everyone seems to grab for that one first to play with :D

Bushnell Trophy works just fine, personally I think the dot is a bit big but it hasn’t stopped me from using it calling coyotes into bush meadows. Lot of fun using it actually.

Could always do this too, but that's the end of using stripper clips and of course you will get scope strikes from ejected cases.

I did it too,and i find out it was sitting too high for me,thanks to amazon no question when returning a product, and then go the sightmark, witch was my cup of tea :)

Norton,

Thanks for sharing the pictures, gives me an idea how it will look once she's mounted. I really like the look of the MP but its too high for me even with the rest. The trophy should be coming in the mail tomorrow. If the dot is too big I might just return it. Like Soldner said, with amazon its never an issue.

And I do like the scope option but If I ever go that route I'd invest in a deflector for sure. If that tape you have to protect the finish?
