SKS Bubba project

I don't need to compare anything to know that I like my semiautomatics semiautomatic but yes my No.5 sporter vastly outshoots my SKS of which shoots pretty good. Converting the SKS to a bolt action takes away its biggest draw and drops it into a class of rifles that it can't compete with. Its like putting an efficient 4 banger in a supercar. Good gas mileage sure but now soccer mom's blow the doors off it in their minivans. No thanks.

You obviously know a hell of a lot supernova, you should write a book:D

For the benefit of interested parties (other than supernova as he already knows everything ) This is how I convert an SKS to a straight pull action.

I replace the gas piston with a press fit plug.

When I want to remove it I push it out again with the gas piston rod.

The conversion takes about 30 seconds, I use it when I want to shoot more accurately, other than that I just blast away in typical SKS style.

Two groups of 9 shots at 100 yards, using a Norinco SKS with a red dot and surplus ammo. The center group is with the straight pull conversion, the group on the right is normal semi automatic.

With a decent scope I think I could do much better.

Well, it was a learning curve for me. I think what I have is a SKS mount, (the mount drops down), but an AK style Scope so it mounts high. I actually shoot it with my right handed but with my left eye as it's my better eye. The optics are good enough, (mainly I like the look, it just looks right on a Russian gun), they're clear except around the edge and the reticle is sharp. I think I'll by an SVD, (lower), one either variable or 8x.

Are you buying from Eastwave?

Yes I'm going to order from Eastwave, is that where you bought yours from ? If I get what I think I'm getting it should sit quite low on the LHS. This is the mount that I am going to get, I think it's made for a Mosin Nagant but it looks ideal for what I want it for. I think I will get two while I am at it.

I'm using this mount which is for the SKS. Drilled and tapped to the receiver, I didn't screw into the stock. No modification to the stock was needed at all. Mount the scope to the rail and make sure you're happy with eye relief before you drill.

Problem is I have an AK POSP I believe. It's much taller and has the release lever on the bottom. I believe SVD/SKS type scopes have the release lever in the middle. My right eye has a bad stygmatism but I'm right handed. I can shoot this carbine well with my left eye shooting right handed. If it wasn't for that, I'd be pissed that I was sold this scope for a SKS. I might buy another scope for this carbine from Eastwave, but does that mean I should buy an 858 for this scope? ;)

Good luck with the project.

Your rail looks more refined than the one I was thinking of getting, I might change my mind and get one like yours.

Your scope does sit very high, it would also be high on a CZ 858.

Thanks for the pics.

I can't get one of those mounts here. I just received this from Kalinka Optics...... Due to customs and ITAR regulations we are currently unable to ship to Canada. What a bummer.
