Does anybody know where exactly I can get in touch with Mr Joe Kokas, gunsmith, in Drayton Valley, Alberta (name and address of his business, phone number, email, etc) ?

Some years ago, I read here on CGN that he was the premier Savage 99 gunsmith in Canada.

TIA

Gunsmithing Service....

Joe Kokas

Not sure of the area code after the change from 403 to 780...BUT...

PH...542-4702

4717-47 ave...Drayton valley AB. T7a-1h7

Try 1-780 then the number or 1-403 then the #....sorry no website listed for him...

Good luck, I saw joe at the gunshow this spring.
He's pretty slow and old, and I'm pretty sure he's doing not much for actual gunsmithing nowadays.
780-542-4702
Best of luck

Thank you all. I just spoke to Mr Kokas on the phone a few minutes ago. Yes, he is still in business but, as he put it, he works only on "old" guns, not "new" guns and my Savage 99 rifle is an "old" gun. He also told me that he had been working as a gunsmith for 50 years !

Very helpful. I know all what I wanted to know.

Met him at a show in Edmonton.

Frankly, not interested in seeing him again.

Will not spend any money with him unless at his estate sale.

Cheers

No I don't.

Based on his behavior in person, and the firsthand reports of his business practices as related to me by a trusted friend, I have no use for him as a human being. YMMV, of course.

I think it would serve everyone better if you gave examples of problems instead of making wide negative comments.

An all my dealings with him were always great. At one gun show I took in a tool box full of parts. Cooey bolts, mossberg parts, enfield parts etc and was hoping to get 20 bucks for them just to get rid of them.He looked at me and asked if I was serious on my price. I replied yup and he said no way. He gave me considerably more for them then what I wanted. Like he said,I am going to make easy money off all these and so should you. I never once had a problem with him and he was always a gentleman towards me even though he is old enough to be my dad. An I in return always showed respect towards him at all times...

Good. Glad he wasn't ripping you off.

I'm certain that he didn't sell anything until he looked up the retail price of it, as he told me he needed to do before he could consider selling any of the parts he had on his table, with price tags upon them. Apparently, if the screaming he was doing was to be understood, not actually for sale. That has been the total of my business dealings with him firsthand. It was enough.

You must have cought Joe on a bad day, we all have them. He keeps track of prices as he must replace parts he sells. I compare prices with WGP in Edmonton. I got a 22 clip from him at the Hanna show,25$ new from Joe- & 38 used from some one else. The clip was for another CGN I have not met but talked to through here. Best to let hard feelings go, they do no good to any one. Best of luck Aj

Indeed he did.

I have his business card with the word "AS**OLE !!" written across it.

Will not deal with him, will happily recommend 'avoid at all costs'.

I think it takes a special kind of person to make comments like this one and your other comments on a friendly informative gun forum. I also think you should list all of the "AS**OLES" who you have interacted with and then proudly tell us who the common denominator is.
I would also take a chance on a wild guess and say there are others here who would love to hear both sides of your story, especially the part about attitudes.

Sorry you feel that way.

His is the one, and so far only, that I have bothered to so store, and share.

In thirty plus years of going to gun shows, that was the first guy that I ever dealt with that behaved so. It made, as you might have gathered, an impression upon me.

He can rot. I will not spend any money with him, nor will I send anyone his way.

The payoff for waiting patiently, and asking politely after a price-tagged product on his table, was his losing his sh*t on me.

This is being friendly and informative. I am relating MY experiences with the man. I was there.

Others have had better experiences. Good for them.

:)

IBTL....I would really hate to see if some one at timmies in the morning screwed up your coffee and dogtnut order!!..

I have personally talked to trevj and dealt with Joe on several occasions while I lived in BC, I'll back up trevj on this one, as I had a somewhat similar experience with Joe about 10 or so years ago and also will never darken his doorstep again. Trev is always helpful and quite an asset to this forum.

Take this as you will, just relating my experiences with both Joe and trev. We all have our opinions, and bad days.
