Hey Everyone,

I tend to lurk more than I post, but I'm at a loss for this one and after a search didn't bring up what I'm looking for...does anyone know where I can buy a Mosin sight tool? I've been searching everywhere for one with no luck. I know I can do it with with a brass punch and rubber mallet, but my hunt camp's shooting range (where my Mosin will be shot for its [really my] first time) really isn't set up for such an operation. So if you know of someone who may be selling them, I'd love to hear from you!

Thanks.

There is no sight tool for a Mosin. The front post does not have an elevation adjustment and the horizontal is moved with a hammer and a punch. Having owned many mosins, oil the crap out of the front dovetail and make sure it can move BEFORE you get out to the range. To make a more suitable front post, use a piece of heat shrink or wire insulation over the post to bring it up an extra millimeter. There are after market sights that work really well, but sorry, there is no adjustment tool for mosin front sights.

What you need to do the job is a brass drift and a hammer. Do not try using a rubber hammer ! :)

To funny Lex.

I used a brass punch and a mallet, no worries, took a few tries to get it bang on but its not difficult.

I did a bit of googling:

Apparently this guy is the original inventor.

I also found this one who apparently ships internationally:

Unfortunately the sights on the Mosin are not user friendly.

The front site can be drifted left to right for windage.

Now, if you're lucky, your front post is way too high and you're hitting dirt at 50 meters when you're aiming at 100 meters.

In this case your "Sight Tool" would be a small flat thin metal file. You can set your rear sight at 100 meters, shoot groups and slowly file down the front post until your POI is at your POA.

Worst case your post is too short. You can slip a piece of 12 gauge wire insulation over the old one and trim it to height as you need or find one of those fancy pants modern replica front sights that slip onto the old dovetail. The ones I have seen can be adjusted for height.

Then adjust your front sight left or right to center your group on the horizontal with a brass punch and a hammer.

At this point your sights would be about as calibrated as they could get with a Mosin.
