Hi,

Can anyone recommend me a compact carbine bolt action .22WMR, perhaps a youth model. Any
recommendation with a 10 round mag and a stainless steel barrel would be a huge plus. Thanks.

Yep, model 93. I have one, and love it. comes with 5 round mag, and 10 round mags can be bought for a fair price. Its smaller than a higher caliber rifle, so it feels like a youth. There are many different types of 93 models to chose from. heavy barrel, fluted barrel, wood stock, plastic stock, stainless or blued, etc. Wolverine has the basic for 239$ i believe.

I have the 93 FV 22Mag with the heavy barrel and I like it except for the cheap plastic stock it came with. I put it in a Boyds Tacticool and its one of my favorite rifles now. . . very good shooting rifle for the money . It doesn't compare for the overall quality and feel of a nice CZ though .
If you are thinking of a Savage I would suggest try and find one of the savage models with the wooden stock or look at some of the replacements for the plastic one . It shot fine with the original plastic stock .. I just didn't like it.

Thanks for all the recommendations. The Savage 93 is very interesting with that Boyd's stock. Did you have to do any fitting for it? I hope it didn't affect the balance too much. Laminated stocks can be pretty heavy. As for the Marlin, I don't trust the quality anymore after Remington bought them out. I've heard lots of quality control issues, and they seem to be too much of a risk to take.

On a side note, do the CZs have 10 round .22WMR magazines, and are they readily available in Canada?

Thanks.

I don't think it would make a great hunting rifle if you had to walk a lot . Savage makes a 10 rd mag as well , The Boyds Tacticool dropped right in but sadly they don't sell them to Canadians anymore. Savage has very similar stocks for the TR series of bolt actions no 22WMR but they do make a 17 ....I have 64TRR and the stock is only slightly different .

Another vote for the Savage 93. I have it in the BTVS stock and absolutely love it, it is on my keep forever list. Shoots about a 1 in h group at 100 yards no problem.

CZ.....

I have owned a handful of Savages, and since buying my CZ 455 in .22 wmr, I have bought 2 more for a total of 3 CZ rimfires.

I have since sold all my Savages.....

Trust me they are a world apart!

This x100 Sold all my savages for cz's

They can be if your dealer will get them.

Savage Model 93FSS it is. Gonna get some 10 rounders for it. I don't know if I'm making a mistake not going for the target barrel (FVSS), but they seem to be a pound lighter. I'll try and deal with the synthetic stock. Is it weird, or does it seem strange, to enjoy shooting .22WMR more than 7.62x39?

I am really liking the new Nikon Prostaff Rimfire 3-9X model with the adjustable objective. They don't seem to be out yet in Canada. Seems like a perfect match, hope it's not too heavy.

Congrats on your choice. You won't be sorry.

I don't have the target barrel, but it will take a fair amount of heat. More than I thought it would.

Honestly take a second and handle the CZ.

Savages just feel so cheap, and the way the mags fit is terrible.

Totally different world as far as quality is concerned.

They are definitely a better rifle, but for a greater sum of money (more than twice as much). I already have a decent walnut Zastava Z5 (almost as good as a CZ), so I'm satisfied enough with the European rimfire rifles for now. For the same price, I can mount the Savage with the Nikon 3-9X Target EFR optic mentioned above. I also don't have to feel bad when caught out in a downpour with a stainless/synthetic as much as I would with a beautiful CZ. I don't own any CZ yet, but I would love to pick one up some time down the road.

all this talk and no mention about the marlins. I have two and after trying most of the ones mentioned, i sold all but the marlins. Older ones but unbelieveable shooters. Even my Stevens has become a second to them. And at $200 each, i could not ask for better.

The older Marlins are worth every penny.

Your right about the mags being a poor design, I found when I first bought mine the rounds would jam going into the chamber. I found the answer on rimfire central . I bent the magazine mounting tab forward abit and this changed the feed angle upwards and the rounds feed in smoothly..
You have to watch the magazine lip tension as well or the rounds will popcorn out of the mag.
It was another easy fix to bend the lips in a bit but it was on a new mag so combined with the other problem it was annoying until I figured it out .But now ever thing is running smooth and it is one of my favorite rifles to shoot .

unless you get something more then a base model savage the price can easily become comparable. THere have been some cz's picked up for $450 for what you get that is a very small fee. To get something better you would be looking at spending $1000+

My next rimfire purchase will be a CZ, and that's coming from a guy with a couple of Savages still in the safe. (neither going anywhere, both are excellent shooters) Having said that J-Man, one can't argue with the value Savage offers and let's face it, not everyone has $400-$600 to drop on a rifle alone. I had a CZ452 Varmint in 17HMR and it's honestly the only gun I ever regret selling. But, that rifle, the scope base and the Bushnell Elite put the package nicely over $1,000 and I can't read threads like yours without wishing people wouldn't bash Savage/Marlin like they do. Savages have treated me very well over the years, and I'm about to put one in my truck (.223) in about 20 minutes to head out groundhog hunting. I'm sure your Savage will treat you well too, I look forward to hearing how she shoots. My Savage .22WMR preferred Hornady 30gr. V-Max.
