Anyone have issues with their tree stands being stolen?
I have a 18' latter stand someone decided to steal the bottom part of the latter off, so now I have a 12' stand. Guess they didn't like the idea of climbing up the stand then taking all the straps off.
Any suggestions on making it harder for thieves to steal a stand?
Thanks
Dan

Firstly, I'd relocate the stand and make sure it wasn't as visible. Then I'd buy a 6' cable bike lock from Canadian tire for $30 and lock the stand to the tree. You could also try taking the bottom half of the ladder with you and stash it a little walk away, this way they wont be able to climb up and grab your stand unless they really want it.

Its happened in the area I hunt before, but not to me. Ive also showed up a few times over the years and found someone sitting in it.

This always makes me wonder why people out there are actually dumb enough to steal from someone who will almost always be coming into the middle of the woods to that exact location armed. Seems kinda risky to me. I also wonder about all the times where someone is having a rough day only to catch someone unscrewing the last peg out of a tree.

i had a tree stand built out of lumber years ago. i used 2x4 for steps to get up to it . believe it or not someone actually took the steps off of the tree .

Hasn't happened to me yet. I lock then with python locks. It will likely happen someday, and I'll be pissed off, but I kinda consider it the cost of doing business hunting on public land that once in a while your stand or cam will walk. Still cheaper than real-estate! lol! I do have a fugly old Gorilla stand and stick for public spots - cost me only 80$ from Sportsmansguide.ca. If that one walks I won't give it a second thought. I also have a beautiful Lone Wolf stand and sticks. I try to save that one for private land or very secluded spots.

Ill have to pick up a bicycle lock after I get a new bottom fabed up. I like the idea of taking the latter with me, kind of a PITA though. I have no idea how it was found, it was about 30 feet in the tree line off the beaten path. No real trail to it. Pretty good tree cover all around.
Guess some people just have no respect, trespassing and stealing on private property.

The only way to insure it isn't stolen is to take it down when you leave and put it back up when you return....If it's on crown land youre kind of claiming the hunting spot belongs to you by leaving it up. That's an unfounded claim. I personally wouldn't remove a stand that I found but I wouldn't have any problem using it either.
If its on private property then its a completly different story!
