Any of you who know me, know that my tastes run to compact semi-auto rifles chambered for mid-powered cartridges. So, for me, this is a major departure!

I just got this from my dad over the weekend - he's had it rattling around in his truck and trailer for years. He finally decided he "didn't need two rifles" (!), and as he preferred his old .303 Enfield, I got this one.

From my quick research on this gun, it appears to be a 1953 Hungarian M44. It has matching numbers on all parts, "02" stamped on everything, and is actually in pretty good shape. Any idea if these are worth more or less than any other M44? I know squat about those guns, so if anyone knows more, please chime in :)

From Wikipedia:

Hungarian M44 Pattern: Domestically produced version of post war pattern Soviet M44 Carbine marked "02".

Looks great, but it is missing the bayonet which effects the value, it probably worth about $275-300 With the bayo maybe $400

A Hungarian buddy of mine has one of these..with the bayo..but his stock got cracked n had to be repaired. It shoots good.
(His wife cracked the stock while in an argument with him..) Dont mess with Hungarian women while cleaning your rifles.

Looks pretty nice for rattling around in the back of the truck.

Well, I think it spent most of its time in his 5th wheel trailer, which rarely moves from his campsite in the summer... so it actually is in pretty nice shape. I'd be surprised if he put 50 rounds through it.

And he does have the bayonet, too - somewhere! If not, I may take you up on that, SA85 :)

Nice..

Have two and got them several years ago for under $150 each.
They both shoot well but I find fit and finish to be much better on the Polish M44s

Nice Mosin! I'd like to get a carbine length one too. You'd better get your dad extra drunk next Christmas or something to say thanks for a beauty like that.

My dad used to own a .22 full auto machine pistol he bought for $100 brand new. Apparently the cops in Quebec City had them in their cars, he says. What I'd give to have had that passed on to me! Don't mean to threadjack, just thought I'd throw that in.

I have a Polish M-44. I can say that with the right handloads it's the most accurate rifle I have ever owned. 52 grains of BL-C 2 with a 123 grain bullet. Pulled 7.62 x 39 bullets work fine. Today with this rifle I shot my best group ever, three shot clover leaf at 100 yds.
I was comparing loads with my new SVT 40. which so far at least hates all my hand loads.

BTW , It shoots badly with the bayonet removed.

I don't think I can get much better with the optics I have on it, so I'm going to do an upgrade. I just bought one of these mounts...
