Which trophy? Black or Blue Wildebeest!

Blues are much more challenging to hunt but blacks are just so goofy that they are a lot of fun to hunt. If I could only take one it would be a blue as well.

I have both, and it more depends on where you're hunting I think. I shot my black one first in Namibia as I was hunting there and blues weren't on the menu. I turned down several chances at blues, over the years, as I thought they were stupid looking. Finally took a big one in SA as I figured I should have one and the trophy fee had gone up 10X from when I could have taken my first one.
I still think a big black is a cooler looking trophy.

Now that's a face only a mother could love !!! I'm talking about the wildebeest guys.

These guys are much cuter. Both faces in this case.......LOL

When I left for Africa, I had no intention of taking either of the Wildebeest subspecies - I just thought they were ugly. Then I saw a skull mount of a Blue, and thought it was pretty cool looking. At the end of the hunt I added a female Black Wildebeest, but I still think I prefer the Blue Wildebeest.

I have never hunted a black wildebeest but the blue wildebeest was my favorite African animal to hunt, very smart and cagey, pound for pound the toughest animal in Africa. Poor mans cape buffalo. I could spend 10 days solely hunting them. Impressive animals for sure

Blue Wildebeest was my first trophy in RSA on my first trip in 2007 so they have a special place in my heart. But I'd sure like to get a Black Wildebeest to go with it and if I was headed back to RSA it would be on the list for sure.

Here's my two; both from South Africa on consecutive years.

The first was hunted by tracking; a group of 4 bulls had following them all morning until one finally gave a patch of exposed black hide to shoot a .375 TSX at. There was actually frost on the windshield that morning which was balaclava weather for the trackers and perfect for me.

The second managed to stop a couple 400 grain .416 TSXs. He went down on the first frontal shot at about 150 yards, got up and bedded down again. He got a second pop once I could maneuver for a finisher.

Its a little hard to get around that.

I've got a couple blues, so will look at taking a black one of these times.

Indeed... :)

To the OP, well I'm in Dogleg's (and others it seems) boat, shot two Blue, so definitely Black for me. That said, you'll encounter Blue more often, and there are more of them, so I would definitely opt for Black if this is your first crack at either. Blue will be easier to collect later.
