I got this old USGI stock (circa 1964) in the post just yesterday.
It's for my M-14s/M305 shorty. It's "vintage" and looks... rustic, but I think it will clean up pretty good, and I'll have that "authentic" milsurp look, rather than a "just out of the armoury" look.
I'm just trial fitting here. Surprisingly it all went together just like the new action from China and this old stock made in USA were made for each other.
It passes the hammer/trigger/sear test just fine.
One thing that's different: The hole in front of the sling swivel is ~ 1 cm farther forward on the wood stock than the gas port on the rifle, so I suppose I'll need to drill a new hole beneath the 305's gas port.
Now before I go to all the trouble of refinishing this stock, the first thing I want to do is put a recoil pad over the butt end and take it out to the range to see how it shoots. If it passes that test, then I'll start working on refinishing.
Yes, there's that huge 'selector switch' hole. Any tips for what to do about that?
Also I'll be looking for tips on the best way to refinish this worthy.
BTW--
I was in the supermarket checkout last night and they had these Justin Beaver dolls on special. I thought it would be fun to take Justin out to the range. I'm going to zip-tie him to a post at 100 yards. It's a great marksmanship incentive.
