Made it out shooting finally.
I set up paper targets at 50,100 & 300 yds and a 10" x 10" 1/2" gong at 500 yds and a 20 x 20" gong at 1000 yds.
I had little time to put together any reloads for the 308 but I did have 140 rds of 175gr SMK's over 44.0gr Varget for another rifle that also chamber in this one so I just used these for a start. The ogive was about 20thou off the lands so it work out well. I only shot three groups with these loads to get a good zero but they were 0.5-0.7" at 100yds. I then shot the rest of them at the gongs. The 500yd 10in plate was a joke, couldn't miss it. At 1000yds I had really good success also usually hitting it 5 for 5. Feeding and ejection was smooth also, no problems there.
I did throw together 15rds of 185 Berger BT over 42.0gr Varget for a quick test. COAL was 2.950" this put them 10 thou off the lands.
The rifle loved these, will deffenatly be doing some some more playing around with them. The second group was 0.650" outside to outside so 0.342" CTC. The other two groups being larger was the fault of the shooter.
These are the 185gr Berger BT groups.
These weren't the best groups on the gongs but I only took pics of them after the last 5 rd groups shot at them. (I didn't take my camera down range when repainting them, snapped these pics before I took them down at the end of the day)
The 10x10" at 500yds
The 20x20" at 1000yds
For the 338 I put together some 300gr SMK loads with 88.0gr to 92.0 grs H-1000. I shot these at 300yds as I feel thats about the minimum practical distance for load development with a 338(500yds would prob be better).
By the time I got to shooting the 338 the sun was beating down hard and the mirage was brutal so it was really a wash as far as load development goes. The groups were all around 3" or a little less with 88.5gr(the second group) maybe showing a node. 92.0gr was starting to show signs of pressure.
Avg velocities:
88.0 2690
88.5 2711
90.0 2721
90.5 2738
91.0 2750
91.5 2775
92.0 2787
The SD was alot less with the hotter loads. I'm have some Hornady 285gr HPBT to try and I will try to get some of the Lapua 300grs to try also. While 1MOA at 300yds isn't bad by any means I'm definitely going to try some other loads. Then again the conditions weren't the best so that could be part of it. Have some Retumbo powder to try also.
Had a great day shooting and I'm really liking the ergonomics of the AX Chassis. Was also good to get some time behind these scopes also as there both somewhat new to me, especially the ATACR
