First Moose Hunt

When I'm walking I take a good belt knife, something to carry extra cartridges in so that they don't rattle in your pocket, compass, a couple 200ml juice boxes, a couple granola brs, a pair of spare dry wool socks, and waterproof matches or lighter. Sometimes some extra food and juice boxes if I'm going to be away from camp the whole day.

A jacket with big enough pockets to carry that gear works well, or a small waist pack.
 
Ask the same question of your outfitter. He is up there and will be the xpert when it comes to what you need. I suspect you will be hunting the water so walking will be minimal. Take a rifle that will anchor them on the shore, .338 Win Mag or bigger. Saves some tracking and carrying....

The weather can vary to anything from shirt sleeve/black fly weather to 4" of snow... dress in layers and be prepared. Take a good compass and basic survival gear. I carry a pair of leather work gloves, a couple of 10' lengths of rope, and some rags to clean up with.

Of the rifles you've mentioned I would take the 9.3, but you might have guessed that from reading my handle. Be sure of your target, especially with calves. Some of those calves can grow up awful fast after they hit the ground.

The Argo is a great suggestion if you were hunting on your own, and getting it shipped up by train shouldn't be a show stopper. But if you 're hunting with a guide, he probably supplies the gear you need to get around. I just checked Hudson and James Bay Outfitters webpage and sure enough he supplies boats for moose hunting. A pair of neoprene waders might be a good thing to consider, but your guide knows the local conditions better than we do, so why not ask for his recommendations? I expect the temperatures would be moderate, but you might see wind blown rain or a snow squall, and fog. September weather can also be sunny, warm, and pleasant, so trying to predict it can be a real crap shoot. A few years after moving here, I got caught out in a summer snow squall that moved in off the Bay on a day that had been sunny and 26 degrees. While I sat shivering in the Zodiac as it pounded through 5' waves, I asked my pal how one should dress for this ####ing country. He laughed and said, "If you've got it, bring it!" Very helpful.:rolleyes: But I won't get caught again without my triple Goretex jacket and rain pants. These things plus a good wool sweater wouldn't take up much room in a pack, and you can't put them on if you don't have them. If much time is to be spent on the water, I suggest you select a waterproof pack.
