Hi All,

I just picked up my very first M14s and can't wait to get it out to the range for the first time. But, first comes the initial cleaning to get all of the packing oil (cosmoline?) off of it. I have the trigger group removed and the barrelled action out of the stock. Is that sufficient for cleaning at this point or do I need to completely disassemble it and clean it prior to firing?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Myself, I would strip it down further and clean everything. Then grease needed parts and re-assemble. The only thing you should avoid disassembly of is the bolt itself. Just wipe the bolt down and make sure the firing pin moves freely and has no oil or gunk in it. Basically you should have the trigger group, barrel with reciever, op rod, op rod guide and spring, bolt and then with the gas system on a shorty its easy to just wipe down the part of the piston that hangs down when op rod and spring and guide are off, then remove the gas plug and wipe the rest down and put it back in gas chamber properly. Also lube or anti seize the gas plug threads when you re-install and keep piston dry. Its a 3/8 wrench for gas plug and try not to disturb the rest of the gas system when wrenching. Thats a short cut way to clean piston on a shorty with bayo lug as it gets in the way of taking piston all the way out. If no lug it can come out and be cleaned properly and gas chamber cleaned as well. Hopefully this helps, also for proper lubrication points when re assembling look it up on youtube is easiest, but its basically minimal grease (lubriplate, white lithium ETC.) on any metal on metal and sliding areas and some light oil very liberally on the spring component. Once again gas system runs dry.

Youtube is also your friend on the take down and then assembly. We have lots of stickies for you to read at the top of this forum. Mine is the FAQ section put up by Skullboy 10 years ago! :D

Cheers,
Barney

Thank you for all of the fast replies. I had to use YouTube just to get the rifle down to the 3 major groups and it was a bit confusing as it looked sooo easy on YouTube. Turned out that it was easy, but everything was just really tight because of beig new.

That FAQ is awesome and I'd recommend that any other M14 newbies like me take the time to read it. Probably a good idea to read it before buying your rifle.

I'm going to proceed with the full disassembly, inspection as per FAQ, and greasing and oiling. Hopefully I can figure out how all of it comes apart and then goes back together. :) I did find these disassembly and lurication guides thatI'm going to use to help me through the process.

Disassembly:

"...completely disassemble it and clean it prior to firing?..." You should only need to take the stock off then give it a bath in varsol or any degreaser. Varsol is just cheap and easy to find. There will be grease in the gas system that will give off smoke if you don't. Doesn't hurt anything if it does smoke though. Once it's clean, grease the rifle as per Buster95.

Take the gas system apart as well and when done you will have to adjust it as well because it will fire like a single shot rifle out of the box most people go what the first time they shoot it.

make sure you learn how to adjust the gas system to the ammo you plan on shooting.

Hey haha49.

Don't know if Ive been missing something, but there's no adjustment on my gas system other than on or off.
Only asking because Im curious as to what adjustment can be made,
Cheers :)

OK she's all ready to shoot. Should be out to the range either tomorrow or Monday. I'll let you know how it shoots!

Hmmm, guess I'd better read up on how to use the iron sights.

There's no adjustment in the gas system, only on or off.

Anything that slides, you grease. Anything that pivots, you oil.

I just got my second M305 last week... Use break free "CLP" and clean everything.

Open up the gas plug "after disassembly" and use Q-tips and clean the inside of the cylinder, the piston... Everything. Use some CLP on the piston to clean all the packing oil off... But then make sure it's dry... Both the piston and the internal area of travel.. Fir the piston... "the plug side" Both sections. Try and take the piston out... But if its a shorty like myne...The bayonet lug won't let you. Do the best you can. In the end the piston needs to be clean and dry. If you wipe the rest of the rifle down with CLP... Then dry it off with The cheap colored microfiber cloths from Canadian tire... You will be surprised at how nice it cleans up.

Follow the greasing instructions above.
"I went with white lithium bearing grease"

Good advice here ;)
Getting all that chinese packing oil/cosmoline/grit out of all the parts. A lot of guys break out a tooth brush and a lint free rag and go town on 'everything" with Simply Green.
I like to use sunlight dish liquid cuts grease like a mudderfugger. I use a 45 acp soft bore swab for cleaning gas cylinder.
Once all the grease, oil it came with is removed, CLP everything and wipe down. Lordco has Seafoam deep creep in a can and same as CLP.
Bolt (inside), Gas system, cylinder and piston run dry, no lubricants. I personally do not apply grease or anti sieze to gas plug... That's a new one for me... Don't recommend this at all.

For you shorty owners having issues getting pistons out ...
1)Remove gas plug
2)Undo and unthread gas lock, slide towards flash hider
3)Slide gas cylinder towards flash hider and rotate so piston can be removed.

Sometimes all ya gotta do is undo the gas lock, rotate it out of pistons way and it will come out.

Last piece of advice... Always make sure that piston is sticking out of the oprod end of the cylinder before tightening down the gas plug (90 inch pounds torque)

Grease her up, run a patch thru bore, verify safety checks and feed her some ammo ;)

First trip to the range.

This was my best 5 shot group at 30 yards with the factory iron sights. It measures 1.01". Of the 7 groups fired the very first one was the worst at 3.94". The following 6 groups were all under 2" with an average of 1.46". I have no idea if this is good or not, but I was pretty happy given that it was my first time using the rifle, this type of sights, and I was using Norinco surplus ammo.

Next I moved out to 75 yards where I shot a single 10 shot group. It measures 4.20". Again, I have no idea if this is any good or not, but I was very happy with it.

Thank you all again for all of the advice!!! I'm sure I will have plenty more questions!

Looking good !!

Your 10 shot string ,,, It looks like two groups , one higher than the other when you changed mags , if I am correct then you would have about a 2 inch grouping at 75 yards X 2 .
Nice shooting !!!
