Norinco Backpacker Alternative - Barrel Finish Question

I was so disappointed with the quality of my recently purchased Norinco "Backpacker" that I decided to cut my NEF Survivor 12ga to fit in my backpack instead. I was reluctant at first to spend the money to trim just 4" off the barrel, but I am very pleased with the result.

I just got my NEF barrel back from Dlask, who cut it to 18.5" for me. The barrel is finished in a satin nickel finish. What would be the best paint (or coating) to stop the cut end from rusting? I am thinking silver Tremco Tremclad paint, but thought there may be some better options.

C-D; Is oxpho blue the same as the blue "touch-up" pens I have seen?
The extra meat in the barrel makes a huge difference. I would not hesitate to shoot any high brass, magnum, 3", 12 Ga round thru the NEF. However I only shot target loads in the Backpacker and had problems. I would need welding gloves, full leather apron and a full face shield before I would try high brass loads in the Norc. Also the extra weight in the muzzle makes for a much better weight balance than the Norc. Even so the NEF is actually 1/2 lb lighter (5.0 vs 5.5 lbs).

oxpho-blue is a brownells product and comes in a creme or liquid formula. The creme is what I have and it is easy to work with. I've seen it at Wholesale sports but it's not always available. It's also a hassle to ship across the border for some reason.

Where in the valley are you? I have a jar of Birchwood-Casey cold blue plus the degreaser you can use if you want to come to my place in Kelowna. The paint will last about 1 shot and vaporize. I did the same with a Ranger SS shotgun but I had it bored to 3" and tapped for choke tubes, mounted a Meprolight illuminated front bead and a home built single point sling mount. I just added a hammer spur to it also. It's my dog walking protection.

personaly i'd just be mindful of the cut and clean it off and oil it regularly.
looks good to me, I have a Baikal single shot I've been pondering cutting the barrel on for the same reason (not much of a taper on the barrel, pipe cutter would be fine)
what did dlask charge for the work?

(fwiw, that backbacker doesn't look "near new" at all, what happened to the forend. anyway, how much for the backpacker??)

I tried one with a pipe cutter but it left marks on the good side of the barrel. I did this one and a couple of others by putting a pipe clamp on the off cut side and using it for a guide for a hacksaw. Pipe clamps are self squaring and make great cutoff guides for tubes of all types.

Cutting the barrel was $65, drill, tap and install new bead was $25.

This is actually my second backpacker, I returned the first one (but because I had already cut the stock, I could only exchange the action and barrel. This second one (with the original cut stock) has seen a total of 5 target rounds during one range trip.
