Pentax, any thoughts?

I have never used a Pentax scope, but the reviews I have read have been very negative. Tasco is better. What do you want to use it on and how much do you want to spend?

ideally, i'd like to get a unit with 6-24 or 6-18 in 40-50 lens.

no more than $300

its going on a rem 700 308

You will need about $150.00 more dollars on top of the $300.00 to get even close to anything you're looking for. Either buy used or wait and save your money. www4scopes.com for a Weaver Classic V series 6-24x 42 Varminter for $409.88. They ship to Canada and you may or may not have to pay tax "if" customs nabs it at the border. Some of their scopes get through without the tax charge and some do not. I had to pay tax for my Sightron but I still saved $180.00 buying from these guys. Weaver is a very good scope for the money.

I have one on a 17 hmr, and it works fine. It was a gift. Holds zero has taken a few bangs without issue, is clear. I wouldn't buy one myself especially with used leupold s so well priced and vortex well priced with excellent warranty. There are better options thanpentax.

4scopes is a great way to go, especially if customs doesn't get you.

I was told to spend as much on optics as the rifle.

You were misled.

Determine what you need the scope to do and don't bother buying a scope that won't do it even if it matches or exceeds the price of the rifle. If you pay the lowest price it will take to get the optical quality and features that will give you the necessary performance, you will have paid enough even if your rifle costs ten times as much. If you want to pay more because having a famously high quality brand will make you feel you are a better shooter or because you want to signal to people that you have that much money, sure, make yourself happy by spending your money, but your rifle won't know the difference and its accuracy won't be improved or degraded by the price of the scope.
