So I know the police is longer, a 1/12 twist I think, better trigger and better stock...

So obviously spending 1200 over 800 isn't a huge issue... But at what shooting distance or round count will I notice the different ?

Im still a little on the fence of what one to buy !

My local ranges only have out to 300 yards. My buddies farm in spring and fall/winter we can set up out to a 1000 yards... I want to be shooting that distance... will the cheaper rifle make THAT much of a difference that I will notice it ?

Any experience or thoughts appreciated !

I am not buying a 3000 dollar rifle because I still am a fairly new shooter and also don't have the facilities to shoot far enough to justify such a nice rifle.

I use a 700 police, 700 PSS to be more correct, and factory it was sub MOA. Mind you mine was from the 90's when Remington was still the cats behind when it came to precision. With 168 gr match it drills rounds in very accurately, with 178 gr match it drills them in even tighter. With 1:12 twist I've found that 175-180 gr rounds have the best consistency.

If I'm not mistaken the Police still comes with the HS stock which in my opinion sets it apart from the SPS tactical.

In my humble opinion the Police will get you out to 1000 yards easier. My 2 cents. I love it.

im definitely leaning towards the police then, I want a rifle I can slap a good optic on and go bang out 1000 yard hits with. I don't want to #### with it to much other then slapping on a bi pod...

Buy the police then.

The SPS's stock can cause issues, frustration and complaints.

Police, good scope, good mounts/rings, and a bi-pod/bag or some form of steadying. That's all you need to be accurate enough to hit 1000 with relative ease. The trigger (if X-mark) can be tuned to be pretty good in my books. The internet doesn't agree, but the Timney on my gun is a waste and I can't recommend anybody in their right mind to spend the few hundred on one.

After that, bedding will help and can be done yourself for around 40-70$.

My 5R with stock and bedding is a .5in or less rifle with reloads and I imagine match ammo. Can't say I'm that good, but I can get plenty of groups in .75-1. Luck out with a few at .25 and a reasonable margin at .5 (5 shot groups)

Out of the box with a good scope/mount set-up you should expect .5-.75. Plenty good enough for 1000 with repeated hits.

I bought the SPS tac, and the Hogue stock caused a lot of inconsistency. I later dropped the rifle into an HS precision stock and now if I do my part loading and shooting it will shoot .75 MOA. If I were to do it again I would buy the police right of the bat. Good luck!

I had the SPS in the begining, and ended selling it and obtained a more desireable older (and used) R700 PSS ($800) with the original trigger. Not the X Mark one. I think if you pick up a PSS you won't be disapointed. It is one of my favourite rifles to shoot.

If in the 1000+ New range you would then be comparing the Police, 5R and XCR rifles.

I think that's most of them in the just over 1000 rate if new.

Older rifles could be a consideration as well.
