just wondering,

how popular is the beretta, specifically the 92FS... I know they were urber popular in the 80's possibly through the 90's, and now everyone seems to be buying m&ps/Glocks etc. etc.

thanks.

Not "better" designs. Just different and cheaper to mass produce.

Among the shooters I know it's about half and half metal and plastic for the semi auto guns. Of the metal half I'd say Berettas show up about 20% of the time (so about 1:10 overall). The majority of the rest of the metal guns is split between 1911's and CZ's for around here. The other 20'ish% is a mix of various brands.

They also seem to be more popular with folks that just shoot targets from standing at a station. It's pretty rare to see a 92fs in a holster and mag pouch setup used for competitions. It does happen but it's not common. I know because I haul my own 92fs out and use it for the odd match and folks raise their eyebrows in slight surprise that I'm using a Beretta that way. And I've yet to share the field with a second person rigged up with a Beretta when I've got mine out. Although I do trip over folks using theirs when mine is at home.

So bottom line is that you won't see a lot of them around. They aren't rare but they aren't common. But they shoot just fine and have a unique look and feel in the hand.

it's a good design but I think that are better designs as well, cheaper to mass produce does not translate into cheaper for you, so it does not really matter at the end of the day. I believe there is a reason why some items performing the same functions are more expensive than others, call it QC & attention to detail. This applies to firearms in general and probably the best bang for your buck out there, as much as I hate saying it, is Glock.

Closest competitor to the B 92, would be Sig, I have handled both recently (owned Sig 226) and sold it due to it was too big, the Beretta seemed better balanced but the location of the controsl where a nuisance for me I did not like the grip either. Both are alloy guns, despite what beretta fans say (some of them do not even know what the gun is made off), so you have aluminum and steel together, something I am not a fan of, that is just me though...

In my club there is only one guy shooting it in IDPA practice and he struggles with the DA trigger, I have tgried the other day and the grip and sights were plain outdated compared to modern combat guns, there is another one who just shoot from the bench, those are the only 92fs I've seen.
Glocks, Mps, I have lost count of how many are at the range, everybody seems to have one. Between the two, I choose Glock (I am not a glock fan, but MP quality is garbage compared to the europeans guns, I owned an MP9 it works, finishing and QC is not there).

I would say, try to try the gun before buying, the way it feels in your hand changes everything, there is no point fighting a design when there are so many & better options that could fit your hand better. the price tag might be higher in the case of HK but I am yet to experience a gun that feels like it was designed for me like the HK is.

I love love love the Sig, unfortunately, it does not fit my hand as good as my HK, I shoot HK now and I don't see myself shooting anything else, unless the competitors catch up with all the goodies in that design, including the interchangable side/back straps. So there is that.

In the last 2 months I have owned and sold many handguns in order to get the one that fitted the best because at the time I didn't know many handgun shooters that owned the brands I wanted to try. Yes I spent some money buying and selling but that was the price I paid to find the one that I like BEST, hopefully you can rent or borrow from a friend, but trying them all made a huge difference for me and after I did I can tell you it was worth it and I am glad I am shooting HK. I believe the price tag is well worth it, my next option would be a Glock in GEN4, but again, I am not a big fan of that design.

So, bottom line if you are too set in the 92fs just because of looks you will eventually find out what does and does not work for you.

thanks for the replys guys

yeah I already know im a sig guy as of 12+yrs ago haha... I would be acquiring the beretta 92fs for my business regarding making holsters, though I do have the bluegun 92fs the Real gun works best for final fitment etc.

just needed to know if they're popular enough in canada to justify getting the actual firearm. I know the CZ SP01 shadow would be a better buy in terms of popularity,

It was a fad that has passed. It used to be the darling of the movie industry, as well as popular among police forces. then their is the fact that it is still standard issue among most US military branches. All that led to it being quite popular through the 80's and 90's.

But, like all fads they fade away and only the true lovers of the design still hold on to them. More popular, affordable, lighter, compact, and honestly reliable designs took over and as a result, the 92 has fallen into, IMO, the classics category along with the 1911 and the hi-power, as well as dozens of late 20th century pistols.

the CZ is very popular among IPSC, you will do better with that.

The truth..

Redshooter is right. The girsan regard mc and compact w/rail have been selling like crazy, and there is limited accessories available for the 92 platform. The girsans retail between $499 and $599 respectively and are a 92 with a few "tweaks", but still use the same accessories.... so you could fill a needed niche seeing as there is a lack of aftermarket accessories for either the
Beretta or the Girsan (use the same mecgar mags too, and they are a pain to get right now too)
Taurus makes a version as well, the pt99 I believe (could be wrong on that model though)

I don't understand the Girsan thing, for the extra 100$ or so I would MUCH rather have the real gun from Beretta then some Turkish factory.. but that's just me. Some people like to save every penny no matter what.
