The son of one of my best friend came to see me at the farm house, he wanted to show me is new rifle a H&K SL-8 short rail, had one Hilux 1X4X24 CMR green BNIB so i offer to sell him for the cost and i did trow in a set of Millet med, tactical rings, he had with him 4 box of WWB 55 gr...
After the scope installation we went in the pit near the barn to try it, Yan shot it and it was full reliable, but 80 rounds go fast, so went back to the house and got a 200 rounds package of UMC 55 gr, we shot them all, i had my share and quite frankly all i can say is that rifle never miss a beat and off hand accuracy was very good, after he told me the price he paid, had me thinking... JP.

A (fuller) return to semi-automatics ?

If we except the ergonomics that are not on par with a Swiss all of the rest felt as good for a rifle 60% of the price, shooting that H&K SL-8 felt very good... JP.

Without the thumbhole stock the ergos of the SL8 don't take second place to the Swiss arms rifle. I own a Swiss Arms and a buddy of mine owns a SL8. I enjoyed shooting the SL8 and actually do like it. However I don't have the skills he has to get rid of the thumbhole stock so it would cost me as much as a Swiss to make the rifle what it should be. I happened to prefer the Swiss Arms overall as there was nothing I had to do to it except optics. The SL8 is unfortunately a money pit unless you have the skill set to convert it. Small things like the polymer bridge style rail weren't my favourite on the SL8.

Here's a link to what the SL8 looks like if you're able to convert the thumbhole stock.

If the SL8 came in a factory G36 configuration for a reasonabale price I would own one. Or even a varmint version with a folding non thumbhole stock. The problem is it comes in a form that's ackward and it can become very expensive to change it around. Otherwise a fun and pretty accurate semi auto. While bulky, it can handle decently with an eotech, red dot etc and front vertical grip. Even with that thicker varmint barrel.

Quick funny story: The first time I shot the SL8 a bunch of us from work went to Poco and Fireball brought out the SL8. He had a magpul vertical grip on the front but no optics. I had an Eotech 553 from a 22LR AR upper with me. We slapped that on and loaded up 10 round LAR mags with 55 PMC bronze (Had the AR15 magwell conversion). Shooting at 50 yards we had a bunch of orange clays. We couldn't miss. The other guys/gals didn't realize we were laughing so hard as this sight wasn't adjusted in for this rifle. We just slapped it on and it turns out it was perfect for the distance and that particular rifle. It was dead on. With the Eotech, front handle, and that ammo that rifle made us look exceptionally good. I still laugh at that to this day. It was a lot of fun.

I should also add that it's a bulky rifle. However once shooting it handled decently and didn't seem as bulky. Not as sleek as an AR but still not bad like I originally thought it would be.

Any way to change the but stock into a G3 style?

As much as G36 style is what people want, the cost is too high and HK support to Canada, well let's not go there.

After the first shots, i knew i would need to have those 2 red letters.....

Just stroke a deal and i am really back in the semi's world, just bought a new H&K SL8-4 223, i was impress enough to get one, maybe not the best but there is something there, i felt, i could not pass by... JP.

What is your favorite beer and wine ? I will bring a case for you, or maybe a bottle of sake if you want different taste.

All I ask is to let me shot that beautiful before I shop for one.

If that rifle came with the real HK36 stock, I would buy it.

I wonder how many sales H&K has lost over the years because of that weird thumbhole stock. Especially in the US. How can you hope to compete with AR-15s and other military style civilians rifles when you're dressing up your HK36 in a gimp suit?

I originally wanted an HK SL-8 for my first rifle, but I went for an XCR-L instead. Isn't the SL-8 discontinued now? What happens to support and spare parts in the future if it is discontinued? I still want one, but am worried about its future.
