First gun... Glock 17 or M&P 9?

BTW: New Gen 4 Glocks come with interchangeable backstraps for different sized hands, etc. This includes 2 backstraps that have a beavertail. May want to check out someone who has a Glock 17 G4 and have a feel before making your final decision.

I'm considering the same two while I wait for my PAL/RPAL. I took a handgun level 1 course and got to shoot the Glock 17(G3) and M&P 9. Went through 250 rounds that day and about 100 rounds back-to-back between the both of them. As a new shooter to handguns, I can't say if one was any better than the other one. The M&P did feel more comfortable in my hands though. My hands take a medium glove size. The longer beaver tail on the M&P 9 made it feel more planted in my hand. Not sure what backstrap size was on it, but the interchangeability is what will probably sway me towards an M&P. Cheers.

I'm having this exact same predicament, g17vs m&p vs cz sp01 shadow.
Does anyone living in Victoria bc have at least 2 of the 3? I would pay you $50 for an hr and bring my own ammo, if your heading up there on a Saturday soon anyways it's a chance for you to make a quick buck and help a guy out. I've been tormented for months trying to figure out what suits my needs and what I like, it all comes down to how does it feel and work in my hands. I've handled an sp01, shot a gen 3 glock 17 and shot an m&p once. It would be nice to side by side compare them.

1911s, especially 9mm 1911s, are not beginner's guns unless you have a lot of mechanical aptitude.

Either the Glock or M&P are good choices for the most part, but the M&P is a better value. Compared to a Glock that comes with two magazines and plastic slot fillers where the sights should be, the M&P range kit comes with a holster, magazine pouch, three magazines, MagLULA loading tool, and usable sights and is typically priced lower than the Glock.

Have to agree with that one nice guns but can be frustrating for beginers

I had the M&P9 and traded up to the CZ75 SP01 shadow, I also purchased a Glock 22 (don't really know why, something told me I needed to own a glock!!) I prefer the M&P over the glock (although this could have something to do with it being a.40 rather than a 9mm?)

My personal preference is the CZ, anyone who I take shooting doesn't want to put the CZ down!!

You just need to understand that both platforms - Glock and M&P are evolving. Older pistols are not exactly the same gun as the new ones.
Both are good and both have issues. In 9mm I would pick up Glock Gen 3. In .40 probably M&P 40, but I own G22 and not planning to sell it.

As already mentioned the M&P Range kit is a "good value".
My experience with things that are a "good value" is they aren't if its not what I want. You end up selling it then buying what you should have in the first place.
.....buy what you want and enjoy.

I went through the same choice process. Ended up with an CZ75 SP-01 Shadow. After shooting that for a while I got a Glock 17. I am happy that I have the CZ75. I shoot it better by far.

Same combo here and happy but purchased it in the reverse order.. same results..

I've shot my cousins M&P 9 and just bought a Glock 22. I like the M&P's trigger better and the grip fits my hand better than the gen 3 Glock. I have small hands though.

I don't think we can compare a CZ75 to a Glock, 2 different platforms with 2 different trigger system. It's like comparing a semi auto AR to bolt action rifle.

Agreed, good advice.

Get to know the local gun store guys nd they will then work somewhat for you, now he knows to never call me for a polymer gun

Why the the M&P in .40, just personal preference?

M&P was built around 40 actually.
Last time I've checked S&W was still trying to work out accuracy issues with M&P9.
These issues never existed in the original chambering.
Latest models however should come with the improved trigger over the older pistols.
