Hi folks, so I was browsing around on other forums and I came across one that stated the requirement for stores to record names, addresses, and ID information about people purchasing ammunition had been rescinded by the CFO of Ontario recently. Apparently all you need to do is to show them your PAL and they don't even have to record the PAL information. Does anybody know if that is the case? Can anybody point out anywhere around the GTA where I don't have to give up so much personal information? Thanks.

The Firearms Act requires an individual to have a firearms licence in order to purchase ammunition. In other words, if you are a holder of a POL or a PAL, you can purchase ammunition.

The Ammunition Regulation Act of Ontario , 1994, requires businesses to record the name, age, and address of individual. A number of years ago, the CFO, for protection of privacy reasons, adopted a policy and sent a memo to all Ontario firearms businesses indicating that an individual’s name and firearms licence were sufficient to meet the requirement of the Ammunition Regulation Act (ARA) as we are the regulators of both the ARA and the Firearms Act (FA) and we have access to the database that allows us to look up the ages and addresses of our licensed clients if such a need arises.

In instances, where individual does not have a firearms licence and he/she wishes to purchase pellets (pellets are defined as ammunition in the ARA but are not considered ammunition pursuant to the FA), an individual would be required to provide government photo ID, age, and address as per the ARA.

I trust this answers your question.

Sail Burlington takes down all info. Smaller stores mostly verify PAL. My experience. I did have small store record all my info as well so looks like it depends on the stores.
I do not care about it so makes no difference to me.

As you pointed out, the law is provincial not federal.

Before a couple years ago they would have to record everything. Some stores haven't gotten the message.

This is an Ontario thing.

And yes, as Ms. Trahan writes, they adopted a policy AND sent a memo to all Ont. ammo retailers saying they no longer have to collect personal info for ammo sales. Name and PAL is enough. All the info they might required can be had from the PAL number (in the CFP/CFO records)

The memo is out there on the net somewhere, but damned if I can find it again. I wrote to Ms. Trahan and got a "refer any store inquiries to ...." response.

Although every store probably got the memo, chances of the newest CTC or Wal-Mart manager seeing it, being told about, or knowing about it are slim. Same with the quickly turned over employees. So they see the book, it has the instructions in the front cover, and they follow them.

Interesting how we're trying really hard to follow THIS CFO policy (Stir stir stir)

Our Wallmart here is all over the place.

Most times it's PAL plus Drivers License, which kind of irks me but I don't put up a fuss.
Other times it's just PAL.
And twice now, nothing....no PAL...just sold it to me.

Apparently all you need to do is to show them your PAL and they don't even have to record the PAL information.
Where does it say that?

an individual’s name and firearms licence were sufficient ... we have access to the database that allows us to look up the ages and addresses of our licensed clients if such a need arises.
That, to me, means they record your name and PAL#. How can they "look up the ages and addresses" if they don't have that basic information recorded?

Yet you can buy ammo from out of province and nothing is recorded, makes perfect sense...........

That's not true, you provide your address, pal, contact number. Get added to the invoice in the business sale records
