I know we all know this but here it is again.
A nice stock set for a #1 mk3* was going on Ebay. It had PPCLI and broad arrow markings on the butt. Nice looking. I bid a little higher than I thought prudent for my budget but the thing sold today for about $550.
I can get the complete rifle for that. Oh well.

Supply and demand.

Could be worse, I need a full stock and a nosecap for my Ross mkIII*, and the same parts for my long lee. I wish I could find a stock for either gun for sale at any price, just to have chance to buy one!!

But yeah, the price of no1 wood is WAY up there. Between the metal parts needed and the wood to do a resto it's almost cheaper to just buy a complete uncut rifle. I have a no1 mkIII* all matching 1916 lithgow in the basement, I'd love to restore her but the lack of Aussie wood and the price of the stocks available make it more of a pipe dream then anything else!

I think I'm going to attempt to make a couple stocks this winter, seems like a better option.

The supply of No.1 Lee Enfield parts is drying up. The PPCLI stamping probably really drove the price up on that stock set. The Patricias never went into action with the Ross, ditching it for the Lee Enfield before leaving England for France. The Regiment was the most experienced Canadian unit at the outset of the war being composed of about 95% veterans of the British Army and the Boer War. They actually served for a year as part of the 80th Brigade in the British Army before deing attached to the Canadian 3rd Division. To say they acquitted themselves well would be an understatement, over 2/3 of the regiment were casualties in just one engagement.

I'm betting, somewhere in India there is still a warehouse full. those guys Never discard anything.;)

Grizz

Numrich still has forends and other bits at very reasonable prices, even if their shipping charges are hefty. I got an unissued walnut forend for $60 USD, and a shipping charge of about $45.
I'm still seeing some mention of someone in Alberta who is apparently making No.1 wood, but no names or contact info has surfaced.

This is one of my favorite photos fromSkennertons book. Wharehouse in India.
And yes, the PPCLI stamps probably drove it up. That's why I went over budget (and lost)

A couple of weeks ago I handled a full wood Ross with PPCLI markings - it's an amazing piece of history, very cool. Sadly not for sale (yet!)

Thanks very much for posting this. I'm sure his phone will be getting a workout soon. Had I known, I'd likely have given my business to him.

I was following the bidding on that, just to see what would happen...I thought it would end around $375/400, but it went ballistic in the end..

The gods have smiled on me. Would you believe that the PPCLI stock set came back to me. I opened my email and the set came back on a buy now for $225 shipped. The deal with someone else fell through I guess. The set has all the wood and all the hardware. I should go out and buy a lottery ticket :)

I was just over $350 on that set. Fraud is always possible. I haven't been burnt yet. (FRAUD ALERT) covers you for fraud I believe. Cross my fingers.

I bid on a WWI Canadian tunic on EPay a few years back. It didn't reach the reserve and the auction ended. Afterwards I received an email that looked like it was from Ebay stating the seller was offering me the tunic at a price below the reserve. The interesting thing was that I had already contacted the seller and arranged a private deal - before the so called "Ebay email". Be very careful with this.

Good luck finding No 1 wood, by the way.
