Thanks for the replies, everyone!

I went a head and ordered one of those 1440 cases from CanadaAmmo, my first order from them, so I hope it turns out to be a good experience. Now I just need to find the right SKS for me. I hear what was said about the Chinese model but I think I'd like a Russian model, at least to start with. Can always add a Chinese later on down the road. Can't wait to head into the store and start my search. Unless something stands out I'm probably bringing home either a 53 or a 54 simply because those years seemed to have the deepest reds.

Cheers.

just be sure to clean it after that corrosive ammo bath
remember they are made to last generations but then again the ammo was meant to last a soldiers life expectancy
which was less than a week
Might want to look into non corrosive
unless you don't mind the field strip every outing
in which case enjoy the savings that ammo is the real deal

Yeah, thanks for the advice and you bring up a good point. I'm still new to the shooting hobby so I actually like doing the strip and clean process. I will enjoy the cheap ammo for now and maybe once I've been shooting for a few years that will change. For now, that deal from CanadaAmmo for 1440 plus free shipping is worth the extra cleaning time.

Cheers

I took 3 out to the range today to find a candidate for a dress-up. They were all marked 1 on the front sight post but one of them shot half the group size of the others, it had a much smoother trigger as well, coincidence? Dry fire them in the store and compare.

The numbers on the front of the sight post do not have anything to do with accuracy. It is an internet myth that has already been discussed on CGN.

Okay, I'm interested. What does it mean then? A co-worker bought a few, several 1s and a 2 and the 2 was piss-poor. From my very small sampling, the smooth trigger shot better than the gritty/crunchy feeling triggers. That was the whole f.- point of my post. I don't know a thing about these Marxist machines but at $200 a pop who cares?

Not all sks barrels are the same dimensions. The numbers are the size of the barrel journal for assembly purposes, nothing else. Not every SKS has a number on the front sight post.

Just got a Russian one yesterday and have yet to shoot it. Apparently has the new style of riveted mag limiter. $159 from Lever Arms... how can you go wrong? Don't know too much about em. Never really looked at em - just grabbed the first one I seen. Stripped and cleaned... this thing looks unfired and unissued. So easy to tear down and clean. It will go well with my Russian URAL sidecar motorcycle!

Did I mention it was $159?? And despite all the Lever Arms hate posts, they were very nice and helpful yesterday. The brighter lighting in there must be making the staff happier!

wow thats a good price!

Yeah, no kidding! Best I've seen is $175. My local place has them for $199. At $159 I'd probably buy two on the spot. I wonder if the $159 still comes with sling, ammo pouch, etc.

I agree, my local guy had them at $179, but now they're $199. There's a tipping point around there. $179 is an okay price for a refurb if you don't have to pay shipping but $199 is a little over the edge IMO.
