257 Roberts Vs 7mm-08

It's the hunter that makes the chambering shine not the other way around. ;)

are you sure?
Hey Kelly, why aren't you out there piloting your combine?:)
Farmer's work Sundays and holidays, too!:p
Any Big Foot sightings out there lately? I just forget that other name for them!

Saskqwartch......

close Looky, but back in the really old thread (that didn't get locked for some reason) it was something like sasksquawchsnatches or something similar to that and Kelly explained that they can be seen and do roam freely around the town of Lac la Ronge, out there in God's country. I was going to head out that way for a visit, but never got around to it! I lived in nearby Melfort in the 60's, but never did spend much time, if any out Kelly's way.

Why evening hunts for the 250? Why not all day?

Great round either way.

I'll be taking out one of my old Winchester lever guns during the daytime. Getting close to the dying hours of the evening, there is this field I like to watch where I need something that will stretch out a bit farther, and give me some more hunt time at the end of day. With some back and shoulder trouble I have, I have been looking for something light to carry for awhile. My hunting buddy has had this Ultralight in 250 Savage for years and I've always liked it. He finally decided to sell it, so I grabbed it. It is so light, and it should do the trick just fine. I have not had a chance to shoot it yet, but he said it shoots really well. I am anxious to give it a try. My daytime rifle was one of my 38-55's last year, may be again this year.

I'm betting that after a while that sweet little 250 will be going all day long.

Those 250's can be nice in the right rifle. Eventually wound up stretching it to a 25-06 which just has more. Those old 99's in 250 or 300 do call though. The Savage 11 Light Weight Hunter would be nice in 250. Or a micro medallion.
All the 308 derivatives; 243, 260, 7mm-08, 308, 338 Federal as well as the 250 and 300 Savage are all overachievers. Never had a 257 Bob but it sounds like it's there too.

On a deer, I doubt if there is enough difference between these two cartridges to make any difference in trajectory or terminal performance. The rifles are not likely to be identical though, even if the same model, so grab the one you like best and go hunting.

.257 Roberts is one of my favourite cartridges, does everything a guy can ask up to large deer and is actually different enough from the mainstream to have useful niche qualities in my eyes. I've used .308, and 7x57 (7mm-08's more experienced and capable ballistic twin) up to game of 2,200lbs abroad and they are indistinguishable, in other words I would just buy a .308 as there are so many more loads and components available. .257 Roberts gives you something distinguishably different than .308/.270/.280/7x57/8x57/7mm-08/.30-06, varmint cartridge recoil with big game performance, flat trajectory, moderate report.

I use the 257 on whitetail and the 708 on mule deer. no real reason I like them both equally it was just the method I chose to get time afield with both

I took an 11 yr old kid to the range the other day with his grandfather to sight in a couple rifles. Boy had never shot a gun in his life, so I started him off at 25yds with a 22 rifle and hand gun. He did great. Hit the targets and was a safe shooter.

Took him over to the 100yd range and showed him how to shoot a CF rifle from the bags. He put one right dead center of the bull, first shot with the 257R. Should have seen the grin on him and his grandfather too.
