Hi folks, I was wondering which Target rifle all of you would suggest for a beginner shooter in .22, My son is 11 and likes shooting my husqvarna .22 single shot bolt. He enjoys taking his time and isn't yet into seeing how many rounds he can run down range! I understand that there are a lot of choices which is why I ask you folks, I was hoping for peep/ aperture sights, good quality used is also ok trying to keep it below $500- $600 tops!
Thanks for your advise!
Cheers Bob

I just picked up a Schultz & Larsen and I'm impressed so far and you can find them in the U.S. anyway for aroun 300.00 or so. Mine was VERY accurate and not too heavy for my 14 year old daughter.

Pick up and Anschutz/CIL 180 for him and don't look back, It is a great junior rifle for beginners and can be had in the $300-400 range. Most gun clubs start with these for their beginner classes.

Savage Mkll Bull barrel ( sub 500.00 ), it will shoot on par with a lot more expensive rifles... JP.

Buy used, your money will go a long way. keep your eyes open in the EE for a Match action 64 Anschutz. You should be able to find one $500-800 with sights. You want good aperture sights, you want to ensure whatever rifle you buy has a grooved muzzle for the aperture sights. You do want a heavy barrel, or medium weight barrel minimum.

Young enthusiastic shooters who want to shoot accurately need an accurate rifle. Nothing is more discouraging than having them shoot at a target, knowing they pointed it right at the dot and didn't hit it. THey know, they often know better than us oldies. Buying him the most accurate rifle you can find would be a great thing to do.

Why do I get the feeling there is more than one good father on this thread! We have trouble getting parents that have kids interested in shooting to pay a lowball price for a round of trap, let alone for a great gun!!

Does the 180 have the match action 64? I believe I heard it does.It has a shortened stock, I wonder how hard it would be to get a good replacement stock with standard lop?

Yes these are 64 match actions.
This is my rifle I have for sale. It was cut about 1 and a quarter inches shorter than original. The LOP could be corrected with an adjustable butt plate (http://www.brownells.com/rifle-part...table-butt-plate-sku352150100-6726-16385.aspx) or (http://jga.anschuetz-sport.com/index.php5?menu=498&sprache=1&zubehoerID=285) if someone wanted to do that. The 180 or 190 stock will work as the only difference between the 2 rifles is the stock shape and the sights. The actions and barrels are the same as far as I know.

Had a mid 60's CIL 190, had a basic trigger, although very good. My newer 190 has a better trigger and different stock, action is slightly different, has a bolt release on the left side. They came in various barrel weights. Either one would be an excellent choice. Would take a long time before the shooter will outperform the gun.

Another for the CIL 190. The 190 came with Anschutz peep sights and a nicer target stock.

Ours gets used all the time, it's a great, light, single shot. As noted above, it is actually an Anschutz with a 64 action.

What's wrong with a CZ 452 Trainer? Just has regular tangent irons, but you can pick up BRNO peep/globe sights.

I guess you could pick up a used Anschutz or CIL for the same price, but the CZ is probably a good option of you want New.
