Hey all, precision newbie here and I was wondering if anyone good let me know what they think is the best weight for a .308 (he he, rhymes)?

I have done some researching online and so far there are two top contenders 178 grain from Hornady (no longer in production for this year) and the Federal premium gold metal 175 grain. I am just wondering which one is better or is there something even better out there?

Seirra Match Kings 168 or 175 are very good.

Out to 500 hundred meters on a sheltered range the 168 are fine. Out to longer ranges or out in the elements the 175's will buck the wind better.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I am looking for the best factory load as I don't currently hand load. Also my barrel has a 1:10 twist rate (it's a Savage Model 10 FCP-SR).

oh then federal gold medal match 168/175 smk.
They are the reference from where all other ammunition are compare to.
Hornady match also make shootable factory ammunition. But in anyway it wont tell if your rifle will like them.
You should start to think about reloading especially if you shoot 100 round a month and more.

For a 1:10 twist in a .308 try ant load thats 175 - 185 grain. Each gun is difforent, best thing you can do is invest in a loading kit and try out different loads. After you compare them, take your pick. Id say try Hornidy A-Max 175g. Works wonders for me.

Thanks guys for all of the info, definately some interesting options, I thought I wouldn't be able to shoot anything heavier than 168gr as I did not have fast enough twist for at 1:10. I've looked at some stuff and think I am gonna start looking to see who carries some of this stuff and start shooting. My thing that I think I may need to take in to consideration is with all of the ballistic data I am reading, how do I know which is the G1 and the G7 coefficient?

I guess just email and ask the manufacturer correct?

Get this.

You should try Hornady Match ammo as well. I have a 24" 308 with a 1:10 that loves the 168 Amax's. I could get it locally cheaper than FGMM'S, that meant more shooting for me :)

I now load a copy of that same cartridge
