Interesting article in Man at Arms for the gun collector
It seems that some Eastern European and FSU countries are aggressively demanding the return of war trophies.
At the request of the Polish Gov't, US federal agents entered a collectors house and demanded a war trophy be turned over or the collector would be arrested.
Seems that they are chasing the rarer prototype weapons for the most part.
Maybe just a US thing but kind of alarming none the less.
Smellie...better hide the Italian job of yours.:)

Quite a number of years ago, the German govt asked the Russians if they would return the art works they had taken after the war.
The Russians reply, and I paraphrase, "No problem. You just bring back the millions of our people you killed and we will return your art."
I kind of liked that

He can hide it at my place if he wants!!!

The US gov. still wants over 4,000 items liberated by Brit Royal Marines from the White House and the rest of Washington back in August 1814! These arguments have been going on, from all sides, since the dawn of mankind.- And will continue.

Great smackdown!

That reminds me of a conversation I heard at work between a Ukrainian/Russian guy and an older German guy. The German guy mentioned that German POWs were held for about a decade after the end of the war in 1945.
The Ukrainian guy said they were cleaning up the mess. "You broke, you fix it. We didnt invite you here."

Half the stuff in the freakin' Louvre was stolen by Napoleon or one of the Bourbons.

Ah, but that is the National Heritage of FRANCE.

Yup..... Caravaggio, Leonardo, Rembrandt, Reubens, Hals, Tintoretto, Canaletto, Michaelangelo, Titian, Botticelli, Durer, both Brueghels......

I guess they were all French, too.

If it were not for plunder, there wouldn't be any museums.

Goering might have stolen a lot, but he also paid CASH for a lot of art.

Check out the basis of the collection at the Winnipeg Art Gallery some time.........

Yup. More loot.

Lt/Col Lipsett commanded 8th Batt early in the Great War, later commanded 2 Div.

Good soldier.

What was his nickname among the troops?

Why?

The "Helen of Troy" tiara was last photographed in Russian possession.Taken from the Germans I believe.

There are still huge amounts of stolen and looted goods that have never come to light. Probably still hidden away somewhere. It would also be interesting to see what's in the Kremlin basement.

Closer to home we have the recent saga about "the bell of Batoche" which was looted from a church after the Riel Rebellion by Ontario militiamen and then sequestered in a local Legion for 100+ years...only to be "re-stolen" by the Metis and re-installed at Batoche. According to the CBC, that great bastion of Canadian culture and morality:rolleyes:, two wrongs made a right on this one.

I would like to see what the Vatican has in their basement(s).

The Vatican has the world's LARGEST collection of ####ography in a underground library! Supposedly you can't ban it if you don't know what's in it.

The greeks want the Elgin Marbles back but the Brits paid for them so "UP YOURS"

Dare I even mention all the stuff the Nazi's stashed in Swiss banks? Fat chance in getting any of that back!!!

Then there all the Egyptian antiquities in various museums around the world.

If the Polish govt had just asked to buy it for their collection the guy would likely have sold it to them. Instead the feds spent lots of money to pay the agents to invade the guys house and threaten him. Obama IDIOCY in action!
