I am shocked, thought perhaps my Chrony was acting up, but a known load tested within spec. This is the first time I've Chronyd commie ammo and I was expecting 22-2300 fps. It is the copper washed Chinese supposedly non corrosive stuff. Is this normal? Has anyone else had this? Might have great potential for Mexican match/hunting ammo.
 
That does seem high. I would expect that S&B and PRVI would be a bit hotter and faster than surplus ammo as it tends to always shoot high. It would be interesting to hear what the readings are of other surplus rounds. What rifle did you use?
 
I suspect the Chrony to read to high, could hurt the gaz system is those readings are right... JP.
 
If your chrony is not opened completely, the two sensors will be slightly closer to each other than they should be, and that make readings higher than actual.
 
The chrony is fine and was set up right. Prior to shooting my SKS s I was checking some loads in my m305 40.5gr H4895 168gr SMK 2525fps. I only chronyd 5 out of one sks, I did it because all 3 were printing 6" higher at 50 yds than this other ammo that came on stripper clips (Czech I think). I'll chrony them side by side next time at the range. The rifles functioned fine, I sure hope this isn't bad for the guns as I have 2 crates of the stuff.
 
Interesting, If you care to take the time and measure some more x39 bullets for comparison, I'd be happy to read your results
 
I chrony'd a few Czech surplus rounds out of my SKS and was getting readings around 2520 fps. It was very consistent ammo as well.
 
I've chrony'd what I believe to be the same ammo. Copper washed Chinese non-corrosive, purchased from Canada Ammo about 2 years ago.
Headstamp is: CBCC 05
Outside of the crate says the lot number is: 01/05

Mine all chrony'd reliably at 2450. I got ripped off! LOL
I do use mine for mexican match hunting ammo because the velocity seems really consistent.

EDIT: (That 2450 fps figure was also out of an SKS)
 
Egg on my face. Went back today, fired 40 rds thru it. Low of 2447, high of 2502. Averaged out at 2460, not as high as I thought I remembered but still a bit higher than I thought that ammo should be. As for group size, about 4.5" at 50 yds. Today's control ammo was 30-06 168gr VLD 57gr W760 @ 2800fps. Nullshine, is this stuff really non-corrosive?
 
Even 2500 fps is pushing hot for a 7.62x39. Average quoted MV is around the 2300 fps mark. Gotta get me some more of this Chinese ammo which, ironically, seems to be the best out of any country's surplus.

There's also two kinds of copper washed Chinese 7.62x39. If it comes in 20 round commercial boxes and is labelled non-corrosive, it is. If it comes in a military style wood crate with steel spam cans and 20 rounds in a paper wrapper, it is most assuredly corrosive.

I do believe it is non corrosive. I haven't done the nail test, but this is from the 1200 round crate and it is labelled non corrosive. Cardboard boxes in a spam can, the spam can was labelled as being for "The Department of the Interior, Riyadh"

Thing is with quoted muzzle velocities is that often times the barrel length isn't stated. I know 7.62x39 is pretty good for short barrels, but the SKS has a 20.5" barrel. When the barrel length is listed it's often for 400mm (16") barrels.

I have the latter, so I guess I paid an extra $100 over the corrosive stuff for nothing grrrr.

What is the headstamp? Typically the "non corrosive" milsurp chinese that turns out to be corrosive was made (in my experience) in 1971 or 1972, it should be the middle number of the stamp, i think mine was 31-72-32 or something similar.

I would say it's the 1971 sometimes corrosive, do a search for lever arms ammo over the past year, there's lots of info about the 71 chinese that is being sold as "non corrosive".
I have found it's a dogs breakfast, some are corrosive, some aren't, unless you nail test every round you can't tell which are or aren't corrosive in those spam cans.

Yes this stuff is non corrosive.
Have shot thousands of rnds with no issues.
 
I chrony'd my russian surplus out of my russian SKS, I'll go find the data. Stay tuned.
