.45 for my 45th birthday. opinions on what to get?

So, I will be 45, and I figured what better way to celebrate than to get something in .45ACP.

I figure 1911 because its classic, single action, lots of fun, tons of parts to play around with etc. And I have always wanted one.

But then I also really like single action army Colt style revolvers. Also classic design, single action trigger, lots of fun, tons of tweaks etc. Mostly not found in .45ACP, but in .45LC(harder to find, more expensive etc). I have seen one now and again in .45ACP. I really want one of these too!

so, what should I get? Keeping in mind MONEY IS AN ISSUE! No gold plated Kimbers, no revolvers actually shot by Billy the Kid etc. And I can only get one, sorry. :(

oh, and no Norincos. I know lots of people have had good luck with them, I just don't want one for this pistol.

I think the 1911 is the way to go in .45ACP. I have a STI Spartan that is not expensive to buy. I have had lots of issues with the gun but it is now broken in and it has been working perfect lately, especially with factory loads. The 1911 needs to be fed the right ammo etc to work, it is a 100 year old design. My problems were mostly my hand loads and the lead I used. The gun is just so perfect to look at as well, art form! I have a more expensive 1911 and they are better in every way. The 1911 shoots way different than most other lesser guns. It has a push compared to a kick and twist. This is due to the weight of the metal frame. I think the .45 ACP round is the ultimate round for a semi auto hand gun.

I should add I have a revolver that shoots .45ACP and that is very cool. This is a S&W but Ruger makes a convertable that shoots .45 LC and .45ACP that would be the way to go I think. The S&W isn't available and would cost lots used the Ruger is reasonable, like $600 new and is reliable. Than there is the moon clip issues with the S&W. The Ruger is single action though. To be honest I shoot all my D/Actions in S/A mode. The trigger is so sweet in S/A.

if money is an issue, than you should look at the Ruger SR1911 or the Remington R1e (enhanced), both around $800, both are a good choice for that budget...

Edit : I have the REM R1e, it worked flawless from the first rounds it shot, zero problems, very well balance and the action is so smooth, from shooting this gun I find that the plateform 1911 is the ultimate one for a 45acp round, very fun to shoot. in 800 rounds I've got maybe 7-8 jam due to the cheap pro-mag 10 rounds magazine that I've bought, that's it!

sorry, price range, under a grand. I'd like to go even cheaper, such as the SAM stuff.

I also see the Lama and some others that are quite cheap. Any comments on those?

I think I would have already bought the SAM Omega for $399 but its in .40Smith. Great caliber, but I really need to do the .45 for 45 thing. :)
 
...you cant beat the Remington R1 Enhanced for the money.IMO..It is very well made and very accurate with an excellent trigger out of the box..
 
I've shot my buddy's Ruger sr1911 and thought it was a great pistol for the price. Saw one last night on www.theammosource.com for $699 with no shipping. He's had no issues with it. I've also shot his Jericho 941 in .45 ACP and it handled well. Heavier pistol so it takes the recoil well.
 
Keep in mind that if money is an issue at this stage, when You are looking for a pistol, the cost of feeding of your 45 may actually keep You away from any shooting in the future.

I have looked at the Jericho and the HK USP. Both cool, and I may get one sometime, but for now, its a six shooter or a 1911 :)

I can afford a more expensive one, but I don't want to go that way. I would like a Tavor, but I have a nice AR. its nice, I like it a lot. I have no regrets on it. I need to do the same thing on the .45 front.

If you'd go SAM, why not a Norinco? Cheaper, better, and has a forged frame.
