Will slugs hurt my combo gun?

Hey CGN,

I recently bought myself a BRNO (CZ) ZH combo gun with the bottom barrel in 12g. I believe the choke is IM or M and is in 2 3/4". The barrels are completely joined along their length to one another by welding, unlike the Baikal combo guns. And as far as I know they are NOT user adjustable at all.

So my question/worry is...will shooting slugs...possibly a lot of them (I like them!) ever "hurt" the gun? And by hurt I mean will it mess up the barrels regulation at all or start to detach the barrels? or even just shake the whole gun lose or just wear it out?

Sorry if this is a silly question, the only shotguns I really have any experience with, especially with heavy slug use are "modern" single barrel pumps/semis.

There's a fellow here who has used Winchester and Federal foster slugs in his without any issues, (its a 7X57R over a 12) and he has a .45/70 tube for the 12 ga barrel as well. AFAIK, that Brno remains in service. The rule of thumb is that a lead slug will safely pass through any choke up to full constriction, but should not be used in extra full or turkey chokes.
 
You'll probably find that the barrels aren't really regulated for slug use anyways. That said I had one and it easily ventilated 4l milk jugs past 100 yards with slugs but to a different poi than the rifle barrel. Recoil with challenger slugs was brisk to say the least.

hmmm. I always thought you had to remove the chokes for shooting slugs. Didn't know that. I love this site!!!
 
"...ever "hurt" the gun?..." Nope. Slugs are lead. Lead will get compressed a wee bit as the slug passes through the choke. Won't be ideal shooting 'em though. Modified choke is more for shot.
 
The manufacturers of slug shells make them so they can be fired in full chokes... which is the tightest choke in a non tubed gun... shoot away...

I may be wrong, but i would think removing the choke and then shooting slugs would cause all kinds of problems with lead and carbon and etc fouling the threads making it hard to put the choke tubes back in.

I guess I should have said I was/am NOT worried about my choke, I know anything less then a FULL or a special "custom" one can shoot foster type, LEAD slugs with no problems.

I am more worried about the overall condition of the gun...like "wear" it out or the barrel joining welds or if it will PERMANENTLY negatively effect my rifle barrel at all. I understand it is NOT regulated for slug use (only for "shot") but with an optic I am not too worried about it, I can adjust it easily enough for them.

You are correct...it can (and probably will!) damage the threading.
 
I don't understand why one would shoot slugs from a combo gun. Would not a repeater rifle be a better choice for big game shooting?

I have a BRNO 7x57R over 12ga. The shotgun bbl was extra full choke so I sent it off to get reamed to I/C for use on grouse while deer hunting. Seems to me that this type of use for this type of gun takes full advantage of its versatility. Combo gun used to take combo game.
 
Mine was in 5.6x52R, and seeing as how bear season is open at the same time as turkey, sighting it for slugs seemed logical. Even thought the 5.6 is legal for bear, the extra horsepower would be welcome.

Mine is in 5.6x52R, AKA .22 Savage High Power. While legal for deer and bear here, I think I'd rather use a slug. Its all dense bush I hunt in anyways.
