First Grouse Hunt Of The 2013 Season

Hey guys, log hiatus. Got a chance today to go for a Grouse hunt! F#$% yea! Last year was a total bust and grouse hunting turned into, "wasting time and money walking though the forest with guns." I was also in University last year so no time for hunting. Anyways, the dog (Barcha), is 100% the reason why I even got this bird today. If it wasn't for her, I would of for sure walked right past with out noticing. There were 3 birds sitting deeper in the woods and the dog ran in and flushed them. I only managed to get this one. There was another one in the tree but it was very small so I left it alone for another day.



Was a good day, Barcha had fun, shes gonna get a new training toy that's going to be made out of the wings and feathers. The breast will be a delicious dinner and the bones and legs will be roasted with tomato paste and bacon then be boiled down for a soup stock.

I hear that. I always feel like a real Gentleman walking with my Beagle. Details on the shottie? I'm thinking of getting an over/under for grouse. I usually use a 22 LR but would like to get the dog out flushing so will have to switch to a shotgun.

Shows good ethics on your part to, not take them all.
I was out yesterday and saw not a thing except some shaggies.
Hard to believe with the ground I covered.
Last time out I saw a couple moose and a muley.
Maybe they're starting to smell the gunpowder?

The shotgun is a CZ Redhead Deluxe 20ga with 26" barrels. Not as nice as a Beretta or Browning but its simple hand done engravings, and the frame made specific to the gauge makes it pleasing to the eye and a pleasure to shoot. I store it in a Browning leather briefcase and everyone at the range thinks its a Browning Citori ;). The only thing I don't like about it is, the gun isn't much lighter than my friends Brno Super 12ga over/under shotgun.

I also clean up shells other have left behind well hunting. The dog knows I clean them up because she sniffs them out.
 
Thank you for the info. I have been looking at the CZs in 20 Gauge. Seems like a nice gun for the money. I do wonder if it isn't best to stick with 12 Gauge if there isn't a weight advantage. Can always shoot reduced loads.
