so, how to skin this cat? picking the right ammo

I cleaned my gun, put 10 or 20 rounds of whatever downrange to get a rough sight-in and warm up the barrel, then did 5x5 round groups of each ammo. Then I only looked at the last 3 groups when comparing results. I figured this put all the ammo about on equal footing and used half a box. Worked well enough for me.

Just about exactly my M.O. as well.
I was pleasantly surprised to find CCI Green Tag to shoot damn near as well as Midas M at 50 yards. Bingo. Found my favourite 22 ammo just
like that ... and a few others I have no use for !

What kind of gun are you trying to be accurate with? You can use up very expensive ammo in a not so accurate gun and have crappy results. One should have a good standard as a baseline.

There is no predicting the number of shots to season a bore to an ammunition and no predicting which ammunition is going to be compatible to a bore. The best thing to do is shoot the gun and build your experiment from what the gun tells you.

i have 2 guns im going to be doing this with.

my custom 10/22 and my Savage MK II

here is what i have set aside for my test already.
picked all this up at Cabela's in Edmonton when i was down there in the spring.
im fleshing out some mid to high end stuff to chuck in for the test as well for ####s and giggles.
so far ive got 19 different loads to try, im thinking probably another 6 (mix of SK, Lapua and Eley)

so depending on how things go i am hoping to do this before the end of sept or into oct.

ive planned on one box per gun for the test.
so 20 fouling rounds off a clean barrel then 30 rounds to test each.
so 6 groups of 5 per gun.
50 rounds per ammo type.
100 rounds per type in total.

should give me a decent base line im thinking.

Guess I got lucky on my CZ LUX. Mounted the scope, rattled off a few Blazer to zero and check gun function. Went to my goto gopher fodder, Win 555 and got these results at 25 yrds. Less than 100 rnds down the pipe. Personally I can't shoot any better so high priced ammo won't improve anything.

How many ammo types in your collection are waxed/lubed?

were it me testing I would set those aside, and test all the rest, with a few fouling shots and then shoot for accuracy.

With the lubed, start with a clean bore, lay down a layer of wax with 25 -50 rounds, then shoot for accuracy..... remove that layer of wax with a cleaning and then try it again with your next set of lubed bullets. The wax is matched to the bullet and to check accuracy you want to start at the same beginning..... which is a clean bore.

With all the other ammo you have its a pig and a poke most of it is copper washed, other just leaded, just ensure you don't get a big lead build up.

Much of the accuracy of the lower grade ammo is attributed to how the pressure affects harmonics and how consistently your barrel whips with said ammo. In fact it has less to do with the bore than many think, although the bore is important.

yup, i will be taking pic's of it all when i go out for testing.
i even went and got that on target shooting program to measure the shots for me!
just waiting on a couple boxes of mid/high end stuff to be ordered and make it here and then ill make a day of it.

oh, anyone know where a fella can get some nice big targets with multiple targets on them?
im guessing some kinda target target?
figured since im going through all this trouble i shoudl maybe flesh out some nice targets to keep track of it on instead of my sheet of paper with bingo dobber circles, haha!

Lots of targets with multiple aim points on the net. I printed off a couple and had a couple hundred done at Staples, cheaper than feeding ink to your own printer. My preference is with fine horiz and vert lines to aid in crosshair alignment for a constant sight picture.

8-1/2 x 11. First 5 shots at some other target, then 4 groups, then switch ammo.

Remington Target by Eley grouped best in 2 rifles. CCI Sub Sonic and Standard Velocity were second best, so that's what I mostly use. Solids in the MKII, HP in the 10/22. Green Tags didn't measure up. Didn't try anything better than the Remington, but that's okay because I'd rather throw nickels downrange than quarters.

pretty sure I saw mostly HV boxes in your pile but NO subsonics!!! try some, my Savage fvsr Mll likes them... (you will shoot 1 or so mildots low at 50yrd vs the HV stuff)
my 10-22 gets HV bulk stuff, fired as fast as I can pull the trigger at pumpkins.
