Thinking of adding a full-stock to the safe...

Don't know if it's the cool air of fall... or the fact that hunting season is just around the corner... But I've got the stupid urge to add a full-stock rifle to the safe :D

Still early in my 'thinking' process, but I'm considering something in 30-06
- Big enough for most games on this continent
- I've got plenty of reloading components (and no gun to use them up!)

Thinking of new CZ550, a new Sako... or (and that's the one bugging me) a lightly used Steyr M...

Is there anything else out there I should have a look/consider? Anybody have first hand experience with the Steyr?

Thanks,
Mike

I've been becoming very interested in these...seems the wood is pretty nice for the price tag and I have always liked the look of a full length stock. I think a European caliber would be fitting though, maybe the 7x57 or better still a 6.5x55....

It's a funny thing, all Spring and Summer I obsess over milsurps and handguns, but the second that first leaf hits the ground all I can think of is what hunting rifle I want to buy next.

I would suggest the 6.5x55: but that's only my opinion based on a lot of rave reviews of the calibre I have heard.

Go for a Steyr M, but try to find a Luxus model. Or, go old school classic and look for a Mannlicher Schoenauer Carbine. There is one of the latter in the EE but it is ridiculously over-priced. Hold out for a good one in the $1500 range. Another nice option, although hard to find is a Sauer 90 Stutzen.

I just bought a custom .308 made from an M98 action, with a hand made full Mannlicher stock.

here's a picture, doesn't do 'er justice, but I can't take a proper photo right now :(

The Luxus... Isn't that the one with the not-so-common steel magazine?

Correct. I am not a fan of the SBS and Steyr-Mannlichers - or should I say I like them less. The new Luxus doesn't come in full stock, while the regular version does. Here is a picture of my Luxus' magazine:

They have a single set trigger - which I really like - and are generally very accurate. The downside is the lack of choice for mounts. You basically have original Steyr mounts, EAW and Warne. Beuhler also made some, but good luck finding a set. Conetrol also makes a mount, but you will have to order it out of the USA.

My rife rarely prints three shot groups over one inch at 100 yards - regardless of bullet weight. Good luck on your search.

All my Steyr rifles (7) are super accurate, ( even the Big Bore 450 Marlin that keep MOA with 325 gr Leverevolution), it is the nature of the beast, the single set trigger on my Luxus is incredible, it is now adjusted at 7 ounces, have to give it the edge over my Nemesis a single stage set trigger that break at 9 ounces... JP.
