Salting hides?

Just wondering what people use for salt when doing hides? Do things like water softener salt work or should one be using something like non-iodized table salt?

Halfords sells cheap salt. Probably it's main feature is cheap, so like as not, it's not table grade stuff.

Got a hiways yard around with a salt shed? That'd like work as well as anything.

fine ground non-iodized salt... You can also soak the hide in sal####er with as much salt dissolved in it as possible... If you're dry salting, you have to scrape the salt off in about a week and resalt. Try to get as much of the meat trimmed off as possible before salting. you need a pound of salt per pound of hide per salting. also, lean the hide, don't lay flat, as it needs to drain, and have it so that the juice that comes out of the hide can run away...

remember : when you start to salt you can't freeze it after all.

so If you really don't need to salt, don't ...
Been sitting in the freezer since last year...I need to do something with it so I was thinking of getting it tannery ready both due to cost and longevity of storage.

Be careful not to leave the salt there too long. I left it on once for 1.5-2 weeks and the hide turned as hard as a brick and cracked in a couple places.
 
I'm not an expert but can someone explain to me why the "no salting and freezing"? I did a hide a few years ago and salted it, heavily, at the camp. When I got home the weather was bad so I put it in the freezer for quite some time before I could tan it, no problems. Why can't (shouldn't) I freeze it after salting? Thanks for the replies.
