Patchy Finish on NEA Barrel

I just spoke with the owner of NEA and we discussed the blotchy finish on the barrels. They are going to work with the company that nitrates them to try and come up with a more even looking finish. Since April more than 1000 NEA's have been sold in Canada as well as 100-150 individual barrels. This is only the second time anyone has brought up the blotchy look to the finish. As such it's never really been something even looked at. NEA promised me they will come up with a solution for future batches of barrels that should result in a more visually appealing look.

OP's looks pretty much like the pics do on the website....I don't think anyone is trying to hide it.

I picked up one of their BCG....finish is about the same, splotchy, other then that it's well made. I realise it's hard to compete in the AR market, but quality over quantity should be the first step in establishing your brand....

I understand that might be just cosmetic, and that it isn't a "high end" barrel but that isn't really acceptable. When you look other companies nitrated barrels they don't look like that. If I was a company owner I would not let that go out my door, 95% of people care about cosmetics. To some it is just a "tool" but to most it is a toy. When you go buy a new quad it doesn't come with scuffed up paint and patchy spots missing, because nobody would buy it. I consider it poor quality, it has nothing to do with SFRC and they are a top notch company just sad that some companies skimp on things like this that wouldn't be very hard to make right in the first place.

From this day forth it shall be known as "Industrial Camo" pattern...I bet I can charge more now :)

In all seriousness, NEA does listen to suggestions from customers. Not everything posted on CGN is viable but many changes over the years have come from ideas/suggestions posted here.

Geez, looking at those finishes in the catalogue makes me think *I* have the defective barrel, as mine doesn't look anything like those. Mine is a pretty consistent grey, with nowhere near the variation/black/grey mix.

Still not a fan of the speed they contour the barrel at, given the spiraly pattern on it, but, it is a great barrel otherwise.

Keep their feet to the fire Ryan. We do appreciate you carrying their stuff for some great prices.

You may have the older parkerized version if its all grey and uniform.
Maybe its the ARC+ that is messing up the nitride, I dunno. I usually coat (armacote) my barrels anyway just for ease of maintenance so its a non-issue for me.

Hey Guys,
Jus tlooking for some advice. I just got a new 14.5" NEA heavy barrel from SFRC and the finish on it is really inconsistent.

(Sorry for the cell pics but my real camera is not here right now).

Is this normal for NEA barrels? Or should I be talking to SFRC about a trade/return?

Thanks

That is just a REAL poor quality nitriding job. The barrel should be a consistent black over the whole barrel. The process is achieved by submersing the entire barrel or part in a bath of superheated salts.

This NEVER should have left the manufacturer.

NEA barrels were never parkerized. ARC+ from the day they launched them is my understanding.

For a civilian market appearance gives you the impression on how the company handle their product.
When you buy a new car do you expect it to be brand new clean or looks like used?
Now the surface is NG. How about the bore? What do you think?

Obviously the bore is perfect or NEA would have never shipped them out...
