Hello,

I am thinking about purchasing either a Tavor or an AR-15 (not sure which company yet). Their use will be strictly for the range. What are your thoughts on this if it was either 1 or the other.

One will be restricted (AR-15) while the other won't (assuming you get the Israeli Tavor). If you don't have an RPAL, forget about an AR-15. If you do have an RPAL, it all comes down to personal preference.

Buy an AR I have a DD M4V5 and love it have used the tavor for awhile cause I was in the same boat. And the easier reloads and cheer fact that you can buy anything for the AR platform. And really 3 grand+ optics and mags and sure you can go hunting but if your caught hunting with a lar 10 rnd your losing that rifle. Just my opinion at the end of the day its your gun

well i own both and i LOVE both. a tar21 NR and a DDm4 v4. the ar15 is a great restricted range toy and the tavor is perfect for out in the bush

Not sure your facts are right there . . .

To the OP: We like the Tavor a lot. But we're biased ;)

In fact, they are not. It all depends on the province, and in some cases, the game hunted.

As for the Tavor... I don`t think you can even be biased on the issue. The Tavor is a wonderful rifle. In my opinion, it all comes down to whether you like bullpups or not.

Speaking of Israelis... go see videos of them using the Tavor on youtube. Their reloading speed is plain scary.

Bullpup non restricted vs restricted full size.

An XCR-L might be the best of both worlds for you.

I love the Tavor, light weight and hassle free transportation.

If you are using the rifle strictly at the range the choice seems obvious to me. Get a good mid priced AR15 (stag, daniel defense etc)and top it with a high end trijicon for the same price as the tavor without an optic. If you think you MAY want to go on the odd woods walk then of course the tavor NR status is a must

Youll have to like the ergos of a Tavor. So try to get your hands on one. I can do mag changes every bit as fast as the guys I shoot with who have AR's. It took some practice but ive got a method down now thats FAST.

The ultra short length would be great in the bush. Accuracy isnt stellar past 100 yards with a 4X optic. Might be better with a high mag scope.

The AR is what it is. Its a long standing and much loved range only gun that has a long list of benefits and a few minor downsides. The Tavor is a relative new comer to our shores that also has a long list of benefits and a short list of downsides. You have to decided which benefits are important to you and which downsides you can live with.

I absolutely LOVE my Tavor with a 1-4 Vortex Viper PST its a really fun gun I can take anywhere. I like the AR's ive fired (and ive fired many, from the cheapest to the most expensive) but they just didnt "do it" for me.

Instead of spreading missinformation why don't you simply recommend that People read the hunting regulations for the Province that they hunt in. 10 round mags in semi auto's are totally legal to hunt with in some Provinces. Every hunter should have a copy of the hunting regs. with him in case a CO gets it a little wrong.

FYI I hunt with 10 rounders sometimes. Haven't really had a need for 10 but I can see how a varmit hunter may benifit. The 10 rounders for me are just a handy way to carry my extra rounds.

For the OP I would look at the Tavor if you have the money and for if you ever change your mind and want to take it out into the woods for a little fun. A AR is nice to have and shoot but just sucks that we can only shoot them legally at the range and have to have a ATT to do so. The Norc AR's surprisingly are a good cheap way to get into a AR if you just want to test the AR waters out for a bit before diving in in a bigger way.

Well I look at it this way. What rifle will be seized first by one of our future governments? The AR15 where the RCMP knows where every single one of them are in Canada and who owns them. Or the Tavor which is non restricted and for the most part untraceable by the police after initial point of sale. For me the answer is obvious. For others not so much.

A difficult comparison as both are different generations, both are good, I like both of mine, must admit the Tavor is one hell of a bit of engineering, just an amazing rifle. I have the restricted as already need ATT to go anywhere, if the are prohibited in future you just get to keep the non-restricted longer until found and then go to jail, cannot use in public as prohibited, so little difference, keep util the Zombies break out, then the police will come and clear every house that has a gun licence. As to Hunting? Is it not pushed division between hunters and sports shooters, why do you need more than three rounds? Just at the range this week sighting in my Tavor, a few hunter sighting in for the season, one looks at me and says, what do you need THAT for?

I own both and love my Tavor so it pains me to say...
Buy the AR. You can get a great AR used off EE for $1000-$1500 and save yourself an easy $1000-$1500.
If you are ONLY shooting at the range, the restricted status doesn't matter. Buy yourself a nice 10" AR and rock it.

CO isn't the problem if you get caught with 10 rd mags in a semi auto centrefire, unless you meant non-semi auto. Hunting regs aside, prohibited items are frowned upon.

There are 10 round pistol mags that are fine in center fire semi auto rifles. As people have said, it all comes down to provincial regs after that.

I also have both...range only --> AR and don't look back. The only reason to buy the Tavor over the AR is for the NR status (don't get me wrong...I love the Tavor...but as others have said you can get a fantastic AR for half the price...did I mention I just happen to have a nice one for sale? wink, wink).

Your giving mis information, stop it. He doesn't have to go hunting with a Lar-15 10 round mag, why would he do that? Maybe you would. Just use the 5 round mag TAVOR comes with if he wants to hunt. And the op said he wants a range gun only, did you even read the op original post?

Get a TAVOR!

10 round pistol mags ie. the 10 round LAR-15 mags are not prohibited, or illegal, please don't spread mis-information. check out the rcmp website for details if you are not sure

Oh, I know the regs, but most of those pistol calibers are too small to hunt big game with. The original post I commented on was about hunting with 10rd mags.
