So my local Canadian Tire got some surplus ammo , yay !
Here's the thing , the case had two numbers on it 7.62 and a 43 . It did not say 7.62X43 .
I ask the person there , who checks with their little electronic gun thingy and says its 7.62X39 . 1200 rounds for $253 , so I buy it .
Get it home , open it up and ... It's not 7.62X39 .
It's the smaller 7.62X43 round . Honestly , I've never heard of this calibre before .
My receipt even lists it as 7.62X39 ( which should make exchange possible ) .
Looks like a cool little round . Anyone familiar with it and what kind of modern rifles , if any , are in this calibre ?

Thanks all .

OMG, haha

are you sure you are looking for 7.62x39 and not 7,62x54? Then I could see the misunderstanding. The next one down from x39 is 7.62x25 like used in the Tokerav pistols.

Edit: and 7.62x43 would be bigger than 7.62x39 not smaller, if it existed

7.62x 39. M43 is the Soviet designation, for the cartridge. Dimensions are indeed 7.62x39

Are they brass cased ? If so.... FUUUUUUUUU

BWAHAHAHA , holy cow , been getting too much sun today , that's for sure .
You'll have to give me a break on that one as I actually had to hold one next to the federal I already have to see they are the same . Optical illusion as I am accustomed to shooting the copper coloured Federal and this stuff is dark grey . Lol .

It's the right stuff , sure looked wrong when I opened it . Just FYI , I checked over the crate and it does have another stamp with 08/89 . I'm assuming that's the date it was produced ? Still can't figure out what the 43 is all about .

Thanks to all you guys . Its great to come on here and get answers so fast , so much appreciation . I was shooting the Federal since I got that rifle and this is my first larger surplus buy , I'd thought I'd boned it .
Since its on stripper clips , I think I'll go to the city on the weekend and buy an SKS to go with my CZ !

Leduc, Alberta CT?

Are you looking to feed your SVT-40 or Mosin Nagant 91/30 rifle? You need 7.62x54R (R stands for "Rimmed")

Is it for your SKS45, Type 56, CZ858/VZ58, CZ52/57, or Rashid? Then you need the M43 round, 7.62x39mm.

If you are talking about feeding your Tokarev TT33 handgun or other such device, you require 7.62x25mm Tokarev cartridge.

From Left to Right: 7.62x54R - 7.62x39mm - 7.62x25mm Tokarev

These are the most commonly used Soviet Cartridges.

Just looking at the round, you could not recognize it... JP.

Hey , it looked smaller , so sue me , lol . Simply an illusion where dark colors DO look smaller then lighter , reflective ones . I really had to hold them together .
The cartridge is marked with only bxn( the n might actually be that Russian letter , you know the one I mean ) and 06 .

Excellent , thanks Desert Fox ! I've never tried the 54R or 25 but I hope to in future !

bxn is a Czech Designation for a certain production factory. bxn is for Sellier & Bellot. Prague, Czechoslovakia. Factory in Zbrojovka Vlàsim,

The Czechs carried over the unique German Third Reich era tradition of using mostly 3 letter codes to denote which factory a certain arm or munition, etc, was made... Makes sense as the Germans had 2 large factories producing arms for them in occupied Czechoslovakia, which when the war ended, kept producing arms for the new Czech Post War State, and for export.

Okay , thank you Rick , that explains that 43 . No brass case , just ugly grey .

My case of 7.62x39 also had the 43 on the case, and yes it us just another conutry calling it a 43. M43 is a 7.62x39

Shoot away. I personally like the dark grey stuff more then the copper coloured surplus ammo. It doesnt smell as bad lol

Well, it looks like I took WAYYY too long to finish typing my post as this was all resolved by the type i hit the submit button.... ;)

I appreciate your effort . There's no end to the information I need to learn .

I just left your city after a three month stay and your CT is awesome . My home Vegreville CT is just expanding their guns and ammo section and hopefully it will be as good as the Leduc one soon .
We've not had the surplus ammo at ours until just now , so I snapped it up .
Weren't the SKSs at your CT around $179 ?
The same black bayo ones are here for $199 . Interesting .
