Chrome lined barrel vs steel, questions.

I was wondering if a chrome lined barrel makes sense. I read that this adds resistance to corrosion and helps with cleaning but decreases accuracy.

I have a Russian 1950s sks with a non chrome lined barrel and the barrel rusts. But the gun comes with a spring loaded firing pin.

I need a very reliable gun that requires the least maintenance and has the longest life. Basically, an SHTF gun.

I would like to know if it would make sense to buy another SKS and keep that as a spare, so when SHTF I can just swap out the barrel assembly.
What I want to do is keep the original bolt and bolt carrier, as the firing pin is spring loaded, gas tube (unless the new one is chrome lined too), and recoil spring.
that will go into the new sks which will have a chrome lined barrel, receiver cover, and trigger assembly. Is that possible or are these parts non interchangable?

Or should I not worry about this? I know I can get ~10000 rounds through a steel barrel if I take care of it but the point is to get the most reliable and long lasting
gun. And I don't want another sks just for collecting because I am not a collector and I like having one of each.

Thanks.

I would get the second sks, but i wouldn't bother with trying to ever swap barrels. The free floating pin really doesn't cause problems unless it is neglected and left with corrosive salts and residual cosmoline.
Either that or get a second 1950 and then you have twice the barrel life, but i doubt you would have enough ammo on hand to shoot out one of those barrels, 7.62x39 aren't super hot rounds, and do very little damage compared to other calibers.

chrome lined is good for longevity but nothing is wrong with a non chrome lined if you clean it properly. Are you pouring boiling water down the barrel after every shooting session followed by some solvent and finally some gun oil? If so the barrel should not be rusting. I think you may need to concentrate on better cleaning methods before worrying about getting a second sks. My $.02

For the price of a nice refurb... I would buy a 1951+ model with a chrome lined barrel. They definitely are less prone to rusting.
If your barrel is rusting, however, you aren`t keeping it well oiled.

Don't shoot corrosive ammo and you can pretend it has a chrome lined barrel. Which by the way will still need looking after, like anything else that you want to last.

Thanks for the input. I only shot it 2 times and I cleaned it with hot water AND solvent once. I don't believe it is rusting anymore. Haven't used oil though. I was wondering if I could swap the bolt, bolt carrier, recoil spring, and gas tube and piston with other, chrome lined versions of SKS.

Corrosive ammo is the cheapest. I have to use that if I want to be able to afford to live lol. Thanks for the idea though.

Have you considered getting a Chinese SKS, with chrome barrel (the military ones, not the civvy), and leaving it in the cosmoline?
Hell, leave it in the cosmoline, wrap it up good, put it in a barrel, and bury the dang thing!

Let's see the militant right wing fascists come and find THAT baby, if the world order breaks down!

For good measure, cover the barrel in pig #### mixed with grease, just in case they find it - see how they like THAT!

decrease accuracy ??? how can you tell on an sks

i've heard of it happening on match barrels for m1a...and only a minor bit

your benefits of corrosion resistance and added barrel life make chrome lining a big plus on a military rifle ...

especially firing surplus ammo

changing the color of your gun blue would make a bigger difference in accuracy

-go to hand loads and you should see a benefit !!

Everyone should have a spare SKS. Fact.

Don't worry about swapping parts. You can retrofit a spring-loaded firing pin if you really want to. The chrome lined barrel adds A LOT of durability to the system. Especially if you can't clean the barrel regularly, for whatever reason. Definitely worth it, especially for a SHTF gun, IMO.

SKSs will never ever be cheaper than they are now. Same with ammo...

49-51 Russian sks might not have chromed bore as some might be refurbed with a new chrome lined barrel and all Yugoslavian sks have non chrome bores, other then that the rest of them are chrome lined

I read that 51 and on Russians have a chromed barrel. And I also read that a non chromed barrel has a silver muzzle while the chromed has a blued muzzle with a silver crown. My local hunting store has some nice 51 Russians but I am not sure if they are chromed. Please help.

Another way is ask the guy at the counter if it is chromed lined or not. That and it can't be a real gun store with out at least two experts hanging around just waiting for a guy to ask for their advice.
