Picked up a Ruger 556E from Al Simmons on friday, 100% pure impulse buy I didn't NEED a gas piston AR( thanks visa). Wasn't expecting to be able to shoot it this weekend but the CFO Ontario processed my transfer in a record breaking 20 mins.
Brought her home and cleaned her on friday, took her to Silverdale today.

The finish on the gun was spot on, nice even, smooth colour, with no blemishes or rough casting marks, pretty much on par with most good quality AR's out there and I was pleased with it.
Controls are standard AR, in the right spot and all were good quality parts that functioned 100% and were smooth and deliberate.
I bought the model without the quad rail handguard but is drilled and taped so I can customize my handguard.
The fit is typical of the average AR, a little wiggle between the upper and lower but nothing drastic.
The action feel smooth with no grittiness or slop but the trigger was a little heavy during dry fire in the house, this proved not to be the case once I was doing live fire at the range.

I did swap out the factory stock and pistol grip for some Magpul goodies which were the ACS(L) and a MIAD grip. Love the ACS.

Ran a few different brands of ammo through her using the ATR 10 round mags, AE, MFS,Wolf,MPA Military classic and one that I can't remember right now (black and copper box).
It cycled all brands without a single issue in about the 100 rounds that I put through it. The trigger felt pretty good, not after market custom good but like a decent factory trigger, I will check it with my pull gauge later.

The gun was shooting low and left out of the box but was quickly brought on target with the adjustable front and rear sights, made easier with the included front sight tool on my key ring.I couldn't get onto the 100 yd range with it but next time. Now to choose an optic?

Overall it shot and felt really good, the operation was smooth and recoil was soft and controllable with the factory brake, I will know better once I have a chance to shoot it more but I am happy with it.
I look forward to stretching it out and seeing how the accuracy is at longer ranges.
This is a good quality smooth shooting AR that is not fussy on ammo, functions great, handles very well and is comfortable to shoot. Ruger got it right IMHO

Im interested in one of these.. someone told me they looked "cheap". I wish I would have caught you at Silverdale!

I was there from 10-3 so you probably just didn't notice the gun or I was shooting something else, I brought several.

Hell no, they are solid, well built guns with a flawless castings and finish, definately not cheap looking.
The E doesn't have any rails mounted other then the top rail and I know a lot of people don't like that look but I do.
I will probably add a small rail section for a vertical grip but that's it. I think even the quick deploy pop up sights are on par with Magpuls and worked great once I got them sighted in.

Stop by one of the local shops and handle one and decide for yourself or look for me at Silverdale I should be there next sunday.

Finally had a chance to get some pics up.
Shinny spots are just oil, cleaned the BCG, bore and gave the outside a quick wipe then I went out and shot it and this is how it looked afterwards.

That fore end rail reminds me of the Badger ordnance ones on my AR10 rifles. Obviously more refined but still something familiar about it. The Badger ones while built like tanks were fairly heavy.

Nice AR. Ruger makes decent stuff. I'm not a huge piston AR fan but I'd have confidence Ruger wouldn't put out something that wasn't decent. Nice pictures.

Looks nice. You replaced the stock....and it actually looks better...it looks well balanced.

I know there have been complaints about it being front heavy but I never noticed that, yes it is very well balanced.

Not familiar with the Badger but this thing is well built, solid and refined without excessive weight.
I never really had any need for a piston AR fan but after shooting the Ruger I am glad I bought it. Well built and well priced.
