Hello:

Is there a difference between the Lee Enfield No.4 Mk.I vs. Lee Enfield No.4 Mk.I* Forend Stock?

I have the * version and I am having trouble making my ebay purchase stock (non * version) line up.

I have a sporterized Lee Enfield No.4 Mk.I* that I am trying to restore to its former glory.

THe only difference between the two is with the bolt release, the mk 1 had a plunger and thus had no wood underneath it, so it could be depressed. On the mk1* the bolt release is the notch in the receiver so the area previously mentioned would be solid wood.

Check to make sure the foreend is straight and not warped, use a straight edge and check both sides, I bought a no1 foreend of eBay looked good on the pictures, but warped enough it was usable. I still may try too straight in as I have nothing too lose.

Only the earliest 1941-42-era rifles usually had the lower right side wood , once they got going the lower side was no longer there. Bear in mind, if you bought new wood and are trying to just slap it onto your sportered rifle, it will need some fitting and likely will not go straight on. Force it , and it will crack somewhere (usually at the back end under the strap). There are volumes on fitting and bedding of wood to Enfields- search the archives here or milsurps-dot-com for advice and tips if you plan to do it yourself. And be patient..
 
Okay, (Insert red face); I just realized an important thing that I left out of my first attempt.

The ring shape piece that goes over the barrel and against the receiver! I can't get the ring to go over the barrel due to the front sight post! Do I need to remove it (drift it out???) before it goes on or should it "slip" over the top?

The process of trying to get it over the top reminded me of those metallic puzzles with the squares, triangles, circles, etc.

Frustrating!

Drift front sight out and back in or is there a "trick"?

You have to drift the front sight off, an alternative (not recommend) you take the ring and tap it with a hammer and make the ring oblong then slide it on, push it down the barrel and it will reshape.

But I recommend properly doing it and remove the sight post.

Doesn't matter really, just drift too which ever side, if your sight post is the varation with the tightening screw lossen it first.

I think that I am going to try and have a gunsmith do this work for me (I was thinking that it was a plug-and-play type of thing). I was hoping to find someone in the Ottawa area who can do this type of thing. Any suggestions on who can best do this type of work?

SCREWDRIVER removs the Front Sight Protector on the Number 4.

SPECIAL TOOL (screwdriver with the blade cut off and a SLOT instead) removes the Front Sight Blade.

On my rifle, it definitely looks as if the Handguard Retainer Collar will slip over the Sight Base and down onto the Barrel, but I ain't taking it apart to try it.

Where is the need to drift anything?

Your wood my have shrunk; it IS 70 years old and Wood does like to shrink..... just like we do.

Oh dude, shut up. Please enlighten me as to where I can readily find and purchase incredibly uncommon and very specific gun parts? Ebay and (FRAUD ALERT) may not support firearms owners, but they always have stock and is the largest store in the world; I can get ANYTHING I want as long as I am patient and persistent.

As for OP, early MKI stocks have the right wall relieved and have the cutout for the plunger style bolt release. I am currently searching for one that is correct for a 1942 Savage, and the parts do not show up very often, but you have to jump on them when they do.
