i kinda feel like i need a 1911.. ive gone the plastic route, ive gotten some higher end combat pistols, some accurate ones, and now, i want that classic look and i cant pick a revolver because all the ones i like are prohib.

back when the SR1911 was on pre order i was eyeing it, but now i think there is enough real life data out there.
so, how is it? is there something else i should consider?

this will be a more drawn out purchase than my m&p40 thread of " should i buy it" edit - 20 min later " ok i bought it but now tell me about it" lol

I had SR1911 - very good, reasonable prices. Bought a Sig, sold the Ruger. You should check out the Sig Sauer Tac Pacs - All stainless with Nitron finish and rail. 2 eight round mags, laser, holster, case. Fantastic gun on it's own. Can be had for $1095 GST included at a particular dealer.

I love the sig 1911! At first I ignored them because of the external extractor (did not like the look) but I picked up a sig target stainless in a trade and it is amazing. I have handled a few ruger sr1911's and they are great for the money but if you can, handle before you buy. I have seen some that are very loose frame to slide fit (think baby rattle) and some that are good.

Some of the versions of the Remington R1 are in the same price range and might be worth a look. A third option in that same price bracket is the STI Spartan. I've shot one of these belonging to a buddy. The Spartan is neatly fitted and finished and had a great trigger feel.

I've seen and shot the Sig 1911. Two of them in fact. They are great looking guns but a pretty big step in cost up from the Ruger and Remington. And with the added lines on the slide and external extractor they aren't a "real" 1911 in my eyes. But as a 1911 like option that feels the same it's great. But then if I were looking at 1911 like guns I'd also be considering the S&W. The stainless version is VERY neatly finished and fitted. Sitting the S&W side by side with a similar priced Kimber makes the Kimber look like tuna salad.

Having read all the threads about the rattle and the front sight breaking off after a little use I think if I were you I would buy something else rather then the Ruger. Just my two cents worth.

Just buy it. I think Canada Ammo has a deal for the Ruger as well as the Norc.....get both, then you'll have 2000 rounds, a nice 1911, as well as a beater.

Start with the Canada Ammo deal, you can't beat it. If you decide you want a better one later you will make your money back on the pistol and you will appreciate any update whether its a Colt, S&W etc. I bought it for the ammo only and traded off the pistol.

I've shot a number of S&W, Glock, CZ75, Higgins, along with a couple of different revolver styles, and I have to say the 1911 chassis is my favorite shooter so far.
I have yet to play with a Baby Eagle 40cal, but unless that amazes me, it's all about the 1911. You can't go wrong with a quality 1911 based firearm.

If youre thinking of getting a Ruger 1911(I have one and like it alot),I would recommend only buying one that you can check out physically.Ruger QC seems to be all over the map and although the one I have(incidentally a older SR1911),is quite tight and well fitted, some of the recent ones ive seen in the local gunshop are pretty poorly fitted and put together. So you take a bit of a chance buying it sight unseen.Perhaps Ruger has overextended themselves cranking these guns out as quickly as they can and quality has suffered.

Other good buys for 1911s in the price range of the Ruger are the STI spartan and the Remington(which I feel is generally better put together than the Ruger)

I also have a Remington R1E, my first 1911. When I bought my SR1911 used a few months later, the Ruger seemed tighter and better made. Also looked better with stainless and rosewood grips. Another aspect about the Ruger - series 70, no firing pin block. After learning how to tinker and customize my R1E, it became my go to 1911... slick and smooth with light crisp break. Converted from series 80 to 70 with a shim.

The STI Spartan is another really good 1911 in that Ruger price range +adjustable rear sight and fiber optic front. The STIs weak point is the poor blue finish scratches and scuffs easily. I can't speak for the Spartan shooting feel, but my STI Trojan 9mm is fantastic - really top quality gun, but the finish is weak.

My Sig 1911 Scorpion is my new favorite now. Strong Cerekote finish, tight frame to slide fit, ambi safety, aggressive G10 grips with integrated magwell, and night sights.... Relatively heavy trigger pull compared to STI and Remington but that's an easy fix. All Sigs are stainless frames and slide - with or without coating.

...as someone who owned a Kimber,Sig,STI Trojan..etc..I can tell you that the Remington R1 Enhanced can keep up and pass most of them..Very well made and very accurate.I have not had a single failure in over 600rnds using various ammo brands including re-loads...

I am leaning towards the Ruger ..thanks for the tip

Everyone should have at least one 1911.

yes but picking 1 just seems impossible....

i like the look of the SR1911... has a but of a classic look to the colours on it. just want to make sure that for the money, there isnt something else that is much better. there are local shops here that sell them so i can get my hands on it first.

so, the 1911 (which i know very little about)should have tight tolerances, next to no slide shake, what else should i be looking for when i see it in person?

I seem to be in the same dilemma... Can't seem to find a 1911 that i like I love them all! But I'm biased on the Sigs. (I own a P226 :) )

I first bought a SR1911. The beavertail and trigger were rattling in the frame (and so was the slide on the frame), I was not impressed nor satisfied... I then purchased the norinco 1911 from the CanAm deal. People who think the finish is great are either blind of have very low standard; this thing is rattiest pistol I've ever seen (Well, what did I expect for ~170$; Norc are so overrated by people around here). The sights were so off I could not hit the paper at 5 yards. Kinda tired of my 1911 quest, I decided to spend more, A LOT MORE! ... and now I'm fully satisfied :)

Model I also considered in a more "reasonable budget oriented" way: SIG classic 1911 and Dan Wesson Valor. I'm more of a buy once cry once type of person and money is no object... I like german mastershop SIGs and high end 1911 was the only way to satisfy my demanding standards.
