During the American Civil War the triple mix of 1/3 Linseed oil, 1/3 Turpentine, 1/3 Bees wax was used as "cosmoline" for weapons storage. During this same pre-petroleum age the triple mix was also applied to firearms as protection from the elements while in used. And the lady of the house used the triple mix as furniture polish and her husband applied it to his metal tools and farm implements.
Jellied petroleum (Vaseline) was used to protect the bare steel used when building the Brooklyn Bridge finished in 1883. Jellied petroleum was also used by the British military as protection from the elements on military equipment. The Enfield rifles fore stock was packed with jellied petroleum as protection against the elements and corrosion.
A conservator at a Museum will remove any oil from the firearms on display and apply a neutral PH wax to protect the firearms from air and moisture.
Air and moisture is the enemy of metal and the two together cause corrosion.
As a side note, the definition of a party pooper is someone who puts sand in the Vaseline.
