Looking to buy myself a shiny new .30-06 or .300 Win Mag this year and I'm looking for a single shot rifle. Was originally thinking about a TC Encore pro Hunter but seen a few folks on another thread here that seemed pretty down on them. So the question I have is this : Is the TC really as crappy as people were making it sound, and if so, is there a good alternative? Any suggestions are much appreciated, thanks for the help.

I've killed a lot of game with a TC Encore and ProHunter and never experienced any problems other than I did have one barrel that just wouldn't shoot....T/C replaced it. An alternative to the ProHunter would of course be the Ruger #1. Just curious about why the desire for a single shot?

I'd choose a Ruger #1 over a TC. At the very least, have a look at both if possible before buying. #1's are robust and well made. I've personally been around TC Encore's with issues, and not just one gun. One had a poor crown, one a very rough chamber(30 TC), and two with primer strike issues, which was resolved on one due to the hammer extension being too heavy to provide enough downforce on the pin. Once removed, it would fire fine. The other one had different firing issues, I'm not sure what the fix ended up being. It was one of the newer ones where the hammer was angled.

TC has good customer service, but I've found that any service needed for a firearm tends to be a pain in Canada.

Seriously, check out the #1.

TC would give you the option down the line to buy other barrels in different calibers for the receiver.

A Ruger#1 would be good if your only interested in one cartridge type.

It would be handy if you could find a store that sells them so you could try them to your shoulder and see which one fits the best for you.

have a friend that couldn't get rid of his # 1 in 300 winmag fast enough as they recoil was obnoxious (his words) tried my 300 wm browning xbolt and couldn't believe it was so nice to shoot. not sure if that indicative of all #1's as I don't have much exp. with them

I have 2 Ruger #1's (.25-06 and .270) and a T/C Encore .30-06 (with an extra .223 barrel). I find that I take out the Encore more often than the Rugers. I really like the short overall length of the Encore. With a 24" barrel it is the same overall length as my M94 .30-30.

I have a pro hunter in 30.06 and have no complaints at all. Owned it for a few years now and it has never given me any problems. It's accurate, points well and is nice to carry.

I will take a well made falling block action any day over a break top action, I don't care how much they charge, they are not a superior design. IMHO
Just to make it clear my post was in terms of quality of wormanship, materials, etc only. Discussing design is something entirely different.

I own a couple Ruger #1's and a couple TC Pro Hunters and the Prohunters are more accurate. Without a doubt the Ruger is a finer made rifle but ultimately I like accurate rifles so my TC tends to go afield more often. Of the four TC barrels I have owned only one was not capable of MOA and that was a 50 cal muzzleloader. Just couldn't get it to do better then 2 inches which really is fine for that caliber.

Handle them both and pick the one that suits your needs best. I know I'll never part with either.

My experience with Encores has been dismal. They have too short a pull length and not enough comb for a proper cheek weld if using a scope. Anytime someone my size tells me they are having accuracy trouble with an Encore, I go right over and fix it. it is easy to fix. I add a slip-on recoil pad with a 1/2" piece of wood in it. This adds an inch to the length of pull (I also have to do this to SKSs to extend the pull). I also install a slip on comb extender. In less than 5 minutes, the owners can shoot the rifle quite accurately. Then they sell it for a real rifle, LOL.

Myself, I wouldn't own an Encore even if you paid me. Since Most rifles are too short for me I use a Past recoil pad until it gets cold. Even with that the Encore still seems short.
