So it arrived today as rifle usually do from marstar. In a nice case, sealed in plastic, covered in preserving oil.
No big deal
All cleaned up the first thing I notice is the bayonet lug flash hider has the spot welds.
**see further comment below-Front sight is over to right but tilted left.
Barrel appears indexed correctly but flash hider sight base is tipped or so it appears.
Now, I'll skip a full rundown and just say this, it everything I expected from Marstar and a little bit more.
This receiver , at least on my rifle, is a thing of beauty. It's smooth inside and out!! Almost like it was media blasted before parkerizing.
Another thing to note, no manufacture markings.
On left side under elevation knob area, mine says
M305
Cal 7.62 mm. 2013###x
there are no numbers under the stock line on left side as in past years.
I'm really impressed with the quality appearance and finish.
The trigger.... Outstanding!! No walking trigger or hammer pin, no hammer hook wall drag on sear, lots of hammer hook engagement front and rear so further tuning to match is permisseable
Oprod fit... Passes tilt test and has decent tab/receiver fit
So far... Damn worth every penny... But I do have to shoot her for full evaluation.
Stay tuned, pics and results comin up shortly
Some more findings
Lug bearing is good
Safety bridge passes
Headspace....bolt fully closes with drag on the 1.635" Clymer gauge ... Now that is bang on 7.62NATO GO
Gas system- finish on exterior is excellent and unit appears dimensionally sound.
Gas lock , it is tool tight at 6 o'clock straight from the factory
Gas port alignment... The 1/16" drill rod passes clean all the way into barrel.... Perfect
Oprod Guide - is "indexed" correctly to gas system and still tight after 20 round test fire
Rear sights. Mine came apart easy but were cranked on pretty tight at the factory. Only negative attribute is a small burr or machining ridge on the top face of geared portion of aperture. This will need to be stoned smooth. Seen this a lot in past few years.
Greased and reinstalled, the rear sight is acceptabley functional.
*** front sight... On first examination of rifle I perceived the flash hider base to be tipped and thus sight came drifted all the way to right.
Now that I've removed front sight, I can verify that indexing is good, flash hider base is good... Front sight is no good.
Checking the front sight, the base and sight post are not at 90degree in relation to each other. The front sight is no good.
Now, after 20 round test fire yesterday, I can say I am very pleased and this might just be the nicest, from the factory, M14s/M305 I've ever purchased.
And I'm absolutely not blowing any smoke up anyone's azz in making that claim.
I'm struglling with photobucket and my stupid internet but will get some pics up asap.
I sure hope everyone elses rifles are as well put together as this one. This one was built while the china high school shop class was on break
