My girlfriend is taking her cfsc and crfsc next weekend and she's thinking she wants to start with a bolt action .22. Having never owned a bolt action .22 I don't have much experience with what's out there. What are some rifles we should ask to look at when I take her to the gun shop? What ones should we stay away from?

Her criteria is:
- bolt action
- .22lr
- magazine-fed
- ready to go for optics
- doesn't require intense maintenance to work properly

She's pretty small at 5'2", so a short LOP would be a plus.

I do have 2 savage 93r17s and a 64fss and they are awesome, so naturally I'm leaning towards a savage made in Ontario. I'm interested to hear what your experiences are with other offerings that meet her criteria. Price isn't a concern.

Price isnt a concern then get a cz. Best rifle out there for the money. Also on the new 455's you can switch the barrels between 22lr, 17hmr, and 22wmr. To get something of better build quality you'd have to step up the the $1000+ price range.

If price is a concern though, the lower priced savage 22's are about the best bang for the buck out there. I have the regular, plain jane Mark II F with the plastic stock, and it's just as accurate as any other model 22's i have shot. There are many other brands that are just as good, but if you are used to and like savage, you're certainly not making a mistake in this case by sticking with what you know.

lean more towards 17hmr better all around round I think. I have a Mossberg 817 great little rifle bolt action with 5 round mags.... heavy barrel

+1

I picked up a II F last week, and had a great time with it over the weekend. The irons were a bit off, with a scope it was dead on.

I love my btvs 22. However throw on a good svope and you'll be over 12lbs. Will this be a bench/target gun, or shooting gophers and walking with it?
I'm woring on an ultralight 10/22.
$280 for new 10/22
$180 new barrel
$50 new chaging handle/extrator
$81 axiom stock
The gun is 3.75lbs with a bushnell rds.
Will be lighter if I canfind a carbon bar
Just an ideaa.

I would prefer the CZ any day high qualityand great shooter, but a Savage will shoot almost as well but not look the part.

Excellent to know! Thank you.

I tried to push the 17hmr. I love it but I think ongoing cost is her concern. She just got a new car and she'd be too stubborn to let me buy her ammo.

I have a 93 btvs in 17 hmr and I do love it. She'll be primarily benching it or taking out raccoons on her family farm, but most likely from a static position. I don't really think weight will be much of an issue but she'll decide that. I had a 10/22 for her to use up until last Christmas and she wasn't too crazy about it since she's specifically asking for a bolt action now.

So so far it's the CZ or a Savage. Does the CZ have an adjustable trigger?

.
I would consider the Savage Mark II with the accutrigger, and a standard barrel weight. The slight additional price for the accutrigger is well worth it.

The CZ is certainly a quality rifle and well made. Another one to look at is the Zastava Z5, which is available for under $300 from Trade-Ex and other dealers. It is well made, has an adjustable trigger, is very accurate, and has a wood stock. Usually a second magazine comes with the rifle, but magazines are available too.

I used to be a big proponent of the Savage rimfires...but my affection for them is really slipping for a host of reasons. That said...I just bought a new FV-SR and it's a pretty decent little shooter. Going forward, I suspect it'll be CZs I'll be shopping for. The metal finishing on this FV-SR's barrel is so rough that when I when I rubbed the barrel down with a lightly-oiled rag (firmly, to get in the flutes) it actually ground a hole through the rag! lol (a retired, cotton T-shirt)

Have a look at the CZ Scout. Full bore 22 in a small package, very accurate to boot. Have one with a Burris Timberline, it does as they say " shoot the lights out" Single shot adapter is included but 5 and 10 round magazines are available.
