Hi, first post here. I thought I'd post my two latest and favourite rifles.
I like both the classic SKS as well the modern sporterized versions, so I got both.

First is a 1950 Tula numbers matching with no refurb marks. (It likely IS a refurb though(?) The bore is brilliant and spotless, though not chromed.

The other is a Norinco SKS with Tapco Darth Earth stock. Factory /625\ built.
This one is tough to date based on it's mixture of features. Plus, I'm not all that well versed with the Chinese SKS' either.
It has a 1 million serial# (7 digits) so that would make it 1956+1= 1957. The next number is 7, so that could make it 1956+17= 1973. But not according to the date system (?)
The receiver is milled, and there are no Chinese characters on it. The bolt carrier also does not have the lightening cut on the like the early models do. Also, the trigger guard appears to be sheet metal. So, some indicators point to early, while some point to mid production.


Both rifles feel and look great. I'm looking forward to many rounds with them, and many conversations with everyone here!

Congratulations ! You have the best of both worlds, you can be a soldier or a Walmart commando depending on what mood you are in. :)

Congratulations calling someone a Walmart commando makes you look like a complete troll. If your trying to be funny your coming across as a clown and not in a good way.

Thanks a lot guys! This isn't my first forum, but firearms are a relatively new hobby for me. So I appreciate any and all guidance offered. Anyone have any thoughts on dating my Norinco?

And yet another classic Mark Williams post! He is either patting himself on the back for doing something he puts other people down for, or putting someone or their choices down cause the don't align with his beliefs.
 
I have been a bit of a SKS purist in my short time with firearms so far. But that being said, I now have 3 SKS's and it's time to do a little bit of changing! Nothing permanent or tacky (to me) but I want to get one of those kwik rails and put a scope on my shooter Russian SKS and see what I can do/fun I can have.
 
Awesome pair. To answer your question about the top being refurbished, I can confirm it is 100% refurbished. The SKS didn't come with black bayonets. The blacking would have been put on during the refurbishment process. That isn't a bad thing though because it's not like these are going to be a valuable collectors pieces or anything. Far too many of them are around now. I would probably prefer a refurb especially if it was to be a shooter gun because a refurb would more often then not be in better shape than a non-refurb. Seeing your two SKS's side by side really makes me appreciate the wood stock look. So classic!

Thanks Mike, and yes I would agree about it being a refurb.

Now I have my eye on an early 1950 with the scripted lettering, square gas block and receiver latch with the hole. The madness begins....
 
Yeah it can turn into an addiction, especially given the price and quality of the SKS here in Canada. If you really get the SKS bug and want to add something special then keep your eyes open for an Izhevsk. I have seen many Tula SKS's but only a number of really great looking Izhevsk.
