AR Noob Question

Hi guys,

Just picked up my first AR15, a Norc CQ 10.5... Took it out for the first time today, thing shot great!

Only issue was tonight when I went to disassemble the gun to wipe down the bolt, I forgot that the upper won't pivot with the bolt locked back due to part of the bolt being in the stock... Pretty stupid I know aha.

My question is, could I have damaged anything trying to pivot the upper off the lower with the bolt locked open? I was putting quite a lot of force into it, trying to pull it off by the carry handle... No rubber mallets or anything, but I thought it had somehow gotten stuck.

I know the receivers are made of aluminum, and the bolt steel, any place I should be looking for wear/damage?

nah you should be good to go, you'd have to do a lot more than that to cause some damage. would it move at all when u pulled? if so just check the bcg for any damage but I'm guessing there won't be any. Congrats on your new cq and first ar, wish i still had my cq.
 
I'd just check the "hook" on the bolt end of the charging handle to see if it is bent or marred or anything (that is if you were pulling on the charging handle with considerable force) other then that they're pretty stout and I think you should be good to go.
 
Thanks guys, I figure it'd probably be OK.

The upper only moved marginally when I pulled, just enough for me to think it might just be stuck... I actually chose this CQ out of a couple because the upper/lower fit seemed pretty tight. The others I tried had quite a "rattle" to them, which kinda bugs me though I'm sure it doesn't make much of a difference.

I will say that mine has an especially suspect finish, even for a Norc... Looks like a 3 year old went nuts with a spray can of black paint lol, and the finish is already starting to wear off the controls. Not that I care about the appearance, super happy with the gun for the price!

I assume that was a joke about the dishwasher... The barrel and steel controls would rust, no?

Once in a while has not caused a problem for me. I usually won't do it for no reason, tho'.

The only time I really do it is when I'm demonstrating to someone how to operate the gun, usually at the range before they are going to use it, otherwise, during maintenance and cleaning, I will ride the bolt closed with the charge handle.

Just don't make a habit of it.

+1, I did a quick search on ar15 com and the majority of them say it causes no harm, I avoid doing it personally but if your heart is set on doing it, it's really your call.
if you choose to do it, any damage caused by doing it (though unlikely) is on you.

Oh man, people and their gun phobias......

I also heard that you should NEVER pick the rifle up on a regular basis because all the extra handling could prematurely wear out the parkerization you know!? I don't know exactly but why take the chance!?

Closing the bolt on an empty chamber will surely destroy things in there, never you mind the incredibly violent action of actually firing the rifle thousands of times lololol

For starters you need to read the manual. Better yet, get a copy of the usmc AR manual.

No damage from attempting to separate halves with bolt to the rear and no damage when you allow the bcg to return to battery under the force of the spring in which it was designed for. On a side note, the play between the upper and lower has zero effect on function or accuracy.

Read, learn, shoot, repeat.

I know! Isn't it incredible how people forget that it's a tool and that it's designed to be abused. It's not your great grandma's china!
