We're going for moose hunting/bird hunting to near Sudbury this weekend for a couple of days (compromise for time unfortunately). Somethings bugging me though, and I can't recall specifics.

Is there some sort of regulation around hunting (or not hunting) different species at the same time? Like having the gun loaded for moose and not allowed to be hunting for something else at the same time? Anyone know what I'm talking about? I'm certain I recall something of the sort, but have never been in a position where we might be hunting moose and something else.

Or maybe it's just that we need to wear blaze orange even if hunting bird, maybe that's it?

With the blaze orange, you need to be wearing it if there is an open big game gun season in that WMU. I usually wear it regardless when hunting small game, it might not look cool but its safer.

"In an area where there is an open season for deer, moose or black bear, if you are the holder of a small game licence you may not possess or use a rifle of greater calibre or projectile power than a .22 calibre rim-fire rifle chambered to .22 short, .22 long or .22 long rifle or shells loaded with ball or with shot larger than No. 2 shot (or if using non-toxic shot, you may not use steel shot larger than triple BBB steel shot, or bismuth shot that is larger than double BB bismuth shot), unless you possess a valid licence to hunt deer, moose or black bear as the case may be."

I believe the only condition is you can't have both firearms unlocked and loaded at the same time.

Thanks - that's it then, what I was remembering. So I can walk around with blaze orange at all times, and a 12 guage with either a slug or birdshot ammo on me, but only one loaded at a time. I guess the regs are so that people without tags don't pretend they're birdhunting with slugs.

maybe he's a native?
otherwise hope he checks this thread before c/o's check his wallet

sorry, yes, I'm off by a weekend. We were planning on going up this weekend for archery to thunder bay, but my son decided he didn't want a full week off school. So we're just going up the start of rifle season instead of the week before it.

Thanks for all the info, I appreciate it.

From what I read that would not be legal. You'd be in possession of the slug and that is not permitted as per the regs.
The regs the other poster quotes says "Unless you have a moose tag", which we do. I actually have quite a substantial collection of unfilled tags spanning quite a zoo of animals across about 3 years :).

I'm not 100%, but I don't beleive you need blaze orange if it's only an archery season for big game, but yes for a gun season. We had a guy that did the same as your asking, he walked the roads with a 12g with bird shot and slugs.

Is it legal to shoot moose with a 12 gauge slug in Ontario? Not allowed in BC, as far as I know.... annoyingly...

Ontario stipulates:

Centerfire - Yes
Rimfire - No
Shotgun - Yes, but no person shall use a shotgun smaller than 20 gauge when loaded with shot or any shotgun loaded with shot smaller than SG (No. 1 buck).

A 12ga slug would be a great load for moose too. And generally, at the range you could probably bump off a couple shots pretty quick.
