Last night I was duck hunting in my pond about 500 or so yards away from my house. After a few shots I got a text from the wife " shots are loud tonight... It's raining shot some just hit the patio door sounded like someone tapping their fingernails against it" looked today and found a pellet on the deck..

Now I have hunted here before with no issues with it being 500+ yards away and LOTS of tall tree cover from a forest. I was thinking I wasn't shooing against the wind as there was no wind last night. Might have been a "lucky load"

I was using #2 12g Remington 3" sportsman hi speed steel shot.. The box is in the truck so I can't say what it is right now.

Can't believe the shot traveled this far

Clay ranges have to have a 300yrd shotfall zone, and we use 7 1/2 or smaller shot at less than 1350, so not unlikely high velocity 2 can travel that far!

Damn, 500 yards seems like an excessive distance to travel, are you sure you are that far? Most steel shot looses all its energy within 200 yards, unless your getting into T shot sizes then its a bit further.

People seem surprised at how far projectiles can travel if fired like artillery.

While small shot at that range isn't particularly hazardous (I have been rained on twice as a result of careless hunters), a rifle bullet can retain enough energy at extreme range to injure people. I believe there have been several confirmed sniper kills at well over a thousand yards with a 7.62, and some presumed at much further.

It's always a shooter's responsibility to know where their shots are going, and whether it is safe to shoot in a particular direction.

I have to lol at the guys who refused to believe that a buckshot pellet could travel 300 yards (a thread about a house being damaged by a shotgun).

Yeah but 500 yards is a long way to go for shot. Me thinks you might be over estimating the distance. This happens quite often , I went plinking with a guy once who set his target at 100 ft then started bragging about his grouping at 100 yds. The rest of us were glad to correct him ( big mouth) and show him he needed to triple his distance.

Oh no this is 500yards give or take a few yards but no less then 490 as I have marked it out a while back. Someone said it may have fell from the feathers of the duck ? One did fly over the house after I shot his buddy!

I have shot at that pond plenty of times over the years and just now this happens... Either it was shot in its feathers or the aim was just high enough and Shockley it made it that far..

Either way I won't be shooting the higher birds in that direction anymore for this reason

we have been showered with pellets from other hunters from a considerable distance.it is possible for pellets to travel that far. OP said no wind but was there wind 100-150 feet up. we used to climb large silos at work i have seen it calm at ground level but at 100 feet the wind would be whipping and vise/versa.

As someone who is a frequent sky diver ...this is no surprise..as stated above a relative calm ground wind can be alot more just 150ft up... and past 50m all bets are off..can be like night or day ! So something that is only supposed to be able to travel. 200-300m max can go well well beyond given sometimes extreme wind conditions in altitude changes
