British Columbia man thwarts cougar attack with spear

A British Columbia man armed with a spear has fought off a cougar which critically mauled his partner.

The attack occurred on Sunday near the couple's cabin on a remote island off the west coast of Vancouver Island.

A large cougar believed to be the attacker was found dead on Monday morning. The woman, 60, was in hospital and expected to recover.

An official said the attack could be the first in which a cougar was fended off and killed by a spear.

The cougar attacked the woman from behind as she was gardening near her home, according to local media reports.

Her common-law partner heard her scream and rushed to her defence.

The woman was airlifted to a hospital in the city of Victoria, where she was initially listed in critical condition. She was later upgraded to stable condition on Monday.

A cougar which appeared to have died from stab wounds was found in the bushes approximately 20m (65.6ft) from the scene of the attack on Monday morning.

"I'm pretty sure that this is the first time in [British Columbia], if not Canada and maybe even North America, where someone has stopped an attack by a cougar with a spear and killed it with a spear," conservation officer Sgt Ben York told the Vancouver Sun on Monday.

A necropsy is scheduled to be performed on the cougar to determine why it attacked the woman, conservation officials say.

I'm pretty sure their are a lot of Natives that have done this over the centuries

And other people in the bush... or people hunting with 1... It's the first time it's documented...

I've been attacked 2 times in my life by mountain lions both times unhurt but.... wish I had a gun both times... 1 was my Grandmothers farm and she shot it the other was mountain biking down a hill and ran into 4 of them... That trail had another one shot on the hill this year again they were stocking hikers... It comes every 4-5 years they have to go shoot one.

Fairly rare with man encroaching in their terratory but not uncommon I would presume, with many near misses going unreported..
A gun would be close at hand if I were there on a regular basis gardening or not.

What were the specs. on the spear? I think I need to get me a new spear or have a custom one built.

Actually to be serious, I wonder what kind of "spear" was used? I imagine he just grabbed for some sort of convenient weapon and went after the cat. Maybe it was a "pitch fork" or something that he "speared" the beast with.

Should talk this over with the guy that invented the 'nail onna stick' bear defense tool. I think they may have been infringing on his patent rights! :)

Ya grab whatever comes to hand, when you gotta move fast! Good on him for moving fast!

Cheers

Laugh2

I suppose history is not his forte.

Sounds like they live in remote Cougar country.....having defense tools handy is a no brainer.
I wouldn't be surprised if it was a spear.

If I were going to be walking in their hunting grounds and was worried about enforcers of a law against going armed, I would try to equip myself with a stout walking staff about six feet in length (I'm 6'2") with a hardened pointy end. Much less good than a gun, much more good than my fists.

Fortunately it hasn't come up.

It's a staff. Chinese assault stick.... :)
Easy to handle and low maintenance.

Spears maybe harder to hunt with compared to a bow or firearm but for self defense against an animal a good spear and a cool head is way better then nothing! Anything that can create some distance is useful and if it's sharp on the end well that's even better.

I would pay to see a guy fight a Cougar with a Bo staff, and maybe even use the "five point palm exploding heart technique" as a finishing move! Chyaaaa!!!! Hyaaa!!

The hard part with cats is they are sneaky and attack from the back..... some tribal people that live in Tiger country use fake decoy face masks on the back of their heads to trick the cats.

In the Sundarbans in India, those masks were a way of life. Until the Tigers figured them out. I think the government guys that have to go in wear neck protectors.

I've a boar spear...its a very wicked weapon. The nice part is, if you spear something, it can't push up the shaft to get you. I've never done it, but I hear "hang on for dear life" is the preferred phrase :p
