Alright, so I recently got an SVT-40 and tried running some heavy ball 185gr through it and kept getting failure to cycle and failure to eject problems. That means time to adjust the gas regulator, but my gun didn't come with the takedown/gas tool. Some Google-Fu later gave me two options;

1. Buy a modern reproduction tool
2. Adjust the regulator with improvised tool(s)

For option 1. a non-sniper variant of the SVT-40 tool can be ordered by e-mail at

P&S in Quebec htp://psmilitaria.50megs.com/miscel.html or
Specter Arms in Edmonton htp://www.specterarms.ca/index_files/Page2617.html or
Black River Gunsmithing in the USA htp://www.blackrivergunsmithing.com/toolsandaccessories.html

There is also a CGN sponsor that may or may not offer a sniper version of the gas tool at some point.

For option 2 (as I chose) you will need to takedown the gas system to adjust the regulator (not really convenient for in the field adjustment).

Watch this video [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4iphpyvjq4 ] from 1:35 - 2:40 for instructions on taking apart the gas system.

It's difficult to see in the video I linked but once the gas piston is removed the gas cylinder, which is inside the piston, will be exposed. Next remove the gas cylinder, I used a 6" crescent wrench to loosen it then removed it by hand. The gas regulator should be turnable with minimal force now that the cylinder is removed, again I used a 6" crescent wrench to make the adjustment. Make sure the regulator is properly aligned and reassemble the firearm.

Confused? See the diagram at http://ww.gunpartscorp.com/Manufacturers/Tokarev-33534/Rifles-42353/40-40087.htm for details. The parts I am referring to are #6, #5, and #3.

Just remove the vented guard and you will see where to loosen the gas tube with the right size wrench and then adjust the setting with either a small wrench or good set of pliers. I had to adjust mine from 0.3 to 0.4. My shells would get stuck and not eject properly. Now it runs perfect.

There are no 0.3 to 0.4 settings on an SVT 40.

I suspect you upped it from 1.3 to 1.5.

It was my understanding that the gas cylinder pushes up against the regulator when tightened and provides resistance. When attempting adjustments on the regulator with the gas cylinder and piston still attached the wrench would slip off before the regulator could turn. When I removed the gas piston to get at the gas cylinder and removed it as well, the regulator turned with no problem.

You could be right, it's not like the internet has ever misinformed me before . Then again, my gun is fresh outta storage and might just be a bit sticky still.

YMMV

There's another thread for this. Go to your local hardware store and get this:

I was at 1.5 but it seemed to really snap the bolt back so I turned it down a smidge to 1.45. I havn't tried it at 1.45 yet.

There is no such thing as a 1.45 setting, is what they're trying to say. There's a single, progressively larger gas port drilled at each number, and nothing but solid steel in between.

Setting it between numbers will either close off the gas system entirely, or choke it down to whatever can leak through from the edges of the neighbouring ports.

Canadian supplied tools $25 each plus shipping.
Black River $15 shipped. He does ship to Canada when I contacted him.

SFRC tool is nice as it is the sniper version of the tool. This version of the tool can be used to remove the muzzle brake as well as adjust the gas.

Aww crap I better change it back to 1.5. I came in the mail at 1.3 and the case would get jammed between the bolt and the chamber pointing straight up. I still find it amazing that a little puff of air can move that spring loaded bolt back and forth. The guy who invented that is a genius.
