I haven't had a lot of experience shooting my Tikka 3 and hope to take it out this fall hunting for the first time. Is it dumb to wrap camo tape around the barrel? I was just having fun the other evening and mummified the barrel and guard with Real Tree tape. Would it have any detrimental effects? I think it did help the grippyness. (It's not permanent. I can take it off).

Depends on the tape if it's the one that sticks to it self your fine but if it's not you can have a sticky mess to clean up after.

I've done it before and I don't think it's a bad idea. Use some rubbing alcohol and a rag to get all the goo off after. If your barrel isn't stainless, make sure it's well oiled or even covered with a thin grease to keep any rust from forming. It does look cool, that's for sure. Some of the guys that I hunted with thought it was dumb but I shot animals.

I do it on my stainless barrel when hunting coyotes and I also use burlap, helps cut down the glare on the barrel in sun and snow. I've had a few guys kinda chuckle but I find it kinda funny a guy standing beside me in full winter camo questions why I camo my rifle...my response is why don't you dress in tinfoil if it doesn't matter, but I don't want to start the whole camo debate..

I recommend removing the tape for storage. I use a grip tape on a stainless .45 for IPSC and found that the metal had pitted under the tape ( the tape was left on for an extended period of time)

I wrapped the barrel on my JRC with camo tape, as this firearm is a camp gun and also gets put into the box on my ATV (wrapped in a section of old blanket) quite a bit. As experienced hunters know, the barrel, particularly around the muzzle, always seems to get quite a few rubs and scratches, and I've never been a fan of that at all. The barrel on this one has one layer of tape, but I built up the muzzle with four layers, and let them extend slightly past the muzzle (maybe 3/16") for extra protection. Works for me.

It's not criminal like scoping a lever. Carry on.

Hahaha, Amen!

I did it on my savage, as long as their is no issues with the barrel free floating it should be fine. And if you plan on oiling your blued rifle to protect the barrel before you try to stick it on thats a plan for failure.

Works for me as well.

I was hunting a wide open 1000 yard wide snow covered logging cut had white polar fleece coveralls white gloves and white hat on as well.
